Prepare to Repair the Walls

by Jerry Ousley
11/11/2011 / Christian Living

I can't imagine how hard it was for the Israeli people under the leadership of Nehemiah to repair the walls of the city of Jerusalem under the strained circumstances that they faced. We find the story in the book of Nehemiah chapters 1 4. They had returned from their captivity after seventy long hard years. The first job they had to accomplish was to begin rebuilding the city of Jerusalem. Part of that rebuild was to erect the walls that surrounded the city.

But the inhabitants of the land didn't want Jerusalem rebuilt. They wanted to keep things as they were. The returning Israeli people threatened their existence so they had threatened in return to stop them by force causing the people to work in shifts. While a crew built another crew kept watch for the enemy, weapons in hand. Attack seemed so eminent that even those who worked with their tools had their swords ever by their sides ready to fight in an instant.

Spiritually we are all in the process of repairing a wall. It's a big job and not an easy one. The wall is there to keep evil from our lives. It's a progressive process, one that requires daily work. And if that wasn't enough of a struggle we have the constant threat from the devil who by no means wants our wall built. We are under constant attack from the enemy. If we aren't careful any progress we seem to have made will be kicked over in an instant if we drop our guard and let the devil have his way in our lives.

Our spiritual battle is so severe that we too are forced to work with our tools while our swords are at our sides. The enemy could attack at any moment when we least expect it. I've always said that we must keep a constant watch. If the devil can't get through the door he'll poke around until he finds a window cracked open and get in that way. He's a sly one that's for sure.

So if it's such a constant battle and requires so much attention is it worth building the wall to begin with? I suppose that's a question we must all ask ourselves. In today's economy with so many out of work we often hear of builders who have to redo their wiring work sometimes more than once. When they are away thieves come in and steal the copper wire taking it to the scrap yard and selling it for a few quick bucks. It makes one wonder if all that effort is worth it or not. But they do it anyway. Somehow they are making enough money on the construction that to repurchase the material and rewire the building is much more profitable than just walking away from it and quit.

You know, that's the way it is in building the walls of our lives too. We make progress and we are proud of ourselves for it. Then when we least expect it we yield to a temptation that we may not have even seen coming and it seems that all the progress we made is laying in a heap of shambles. Why continue on? Is it worth starting again?

We've had a problem the past year with moles in our yard. Those tunnels create soft places which are aggravating but the worst part of it is those mounds they heap up. They will push up a hill nearly half a foot high. When it's time to mow I'll ride over those hills and flatten them down first. But within a day or two you can see the hills once again rising into the air. They just won't stop. It was that important to them.

It's the same with building the walls in our lives. When the devil comes along and knocks down what we've done we ask ourselves if it is worth doing over again. Given the reward of a home in Heaven with Jesus Christ and eternal life, I'd say, YES IT IS!
