Being a Winner
by Rick King
11/12/2011 / Christian Living

By: Rick L King
November 12, 2011

Do you consider yourself a winner? This article may shed some new light on what a true winner really is and is not.

Webster's dictionary defines a winner as:
One who gains by success in competition or contest.

Here now is the real difference to those who profess Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord. The word Lord means Lordship or total control. To say this means that Jesus has total control over our lives. We have surrendered to His will alone. Our desire and priority is to find His will and to follow it. This may mean being as the Apostle Paul was by learning to be content with or without. Being that God's ways are higher than ours, what He wants may not coincide so much with what we want. Are we content with whatever decision or choice the Lord makes concerning us, or do we still want to have our own way? Are we willing to suffer the loss of all things that we may win Christ?

Php 3:8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

What is more important to us? Do we want what we want and this is our objective and purpose in life? Do we consider our self to be a winner if we gain the whole world?

Mr 8:36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Gaining things or having our own way does not make us a winner unless they are God's will for us to have. God knows what we need and He has a reason if we are not allowed to have something that will only bring satisfaction to our flesh. God looks at things from an eternal perspective not a temporal worldly perspective like many carnal people do. God is looking for eternal fruit that will remain. Being a winner means that the Lord has had free reign to bring change in us that crucifies our flesh and causes us to become like Christ. Unless He is allowed to do this, though we think that we are a winner, we are actually a loser. We can be a winner from the temporal perspective, but a loser from an eternal one. We can gain the whole world, but lose our soul. Unless we learn to look at things through God's eyes then much of the so-called fruit that we have will not make it to Heaven or give to us any rewards in Heaven. We need to have fruit that remains. The only way to have this kind of fruit is to walk in the spirit and be like Jesus; give up our will for His alone.

I really like what Paul said in that he counted everything but dung that he may win Christ. He learned that the greatest thing that we could win was Jesus Christ. Following Him, walking in His Spirit, pleasing Him instead of self, brings the greatest joy that we could ever have. Unfortunately not everyone has tasted of the Lord in this way. They may have been saved but have never experienced Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit working in and through them. If you really want to be a winner, surrender your life and will to Jesus. Let Him be more than just your Savior; let Him be your Lord. Let what He wants become more important to you than anything that you want.

Mt 16:25 says, "For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it". The greatest thing that we can ever win is Jesus Christ. When He asks us, "Did you do my will?" Wouldn't it be glorious to be able to say to Him, yes, that to the best of our ability we did? That makes us a winner!

I am a 63 year old Born-Again spirit filled Christian, that has been saved for 30 years. Jesus found me when I was suicidal. I learned real quickly that I was powerless to be in control of my life, so I let Jesus take over. He has chosen me to be a warrior for Him. WE win, if we fight His way.
