Running Ahead of God

by Steve Countryman
1/17/2012 / Christian Living

For a pilot knows what it means to be just one degree off course. That one degree can cause you to end up miles from your desired destination. Worst yet is the farther you go the greater the distance from your desired destination you travel. That is what it like for Christians who are eager to do God's will but not patient enough to hear His voice! Time spent in prayer, reading His Word and fasting to get a fresh revelation from God is time well spent. Keep in mind that not all Christians receive revelation at the same time or the same way or from the same person. Revelation is only revelation to the one who receives it as revelation! Revelation brings clarity, focus, knowledge and understanding. It does matter however the way you handle the revelation once you receive it. Some will put it on a shelf and treat it as a future word. Others will treat the revelation as if it was meant for someone else. Then there are those who will treat it as a now word and take off with it not fully knowing or understanding how to implement or apply the fresh revelation. They lack the God given strategy to realize their revelation! That is known as running ahead of God.

Wisdom: the quality or state of being wise; knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just judgment as to action; discernment, or insight. Solomon was the wisest man that ever lived. Even with his great wisdom Solomon tried different things that the world had to offer to experience it first hand and to see if it was worthwhile. Just as knowledge by itself isn't enough either is wisdom, they go together hand in hand. To have revelation without the wisdom to apply it will lead to disappointment and/or disaster.

God showed me the obvious about running ahead of Him. When you run ahead of God you are leaning on your own understanding of the revelation and how to apply it. You think that you have figured it all out by yourself. That is arrogant, prideful and presumptuous! You are leaving God out of the implementation phase of the revelation. And when you run ahead of God you are moving away from God in the wrong direction which means that your eyes are no longer on God. Your revelation now lacks good fruit.

This can be seen in those who claim to be doing God's will when they receive a revelation and start doing it on their own terms. They claim that God told them to do whatever it is a certain way for a certain time but later they give up and blame their failures on the lack of help from others. They lack consistency in their spiritual lives. I have no doubt that most of these people love the Lord but they try to tie everything to their agenda. The question then becomes; are they leaders or in the position of leadership in your church or church group? Do they claim to hear from God but later find other "revelation" to start over with? Do they finish what God wanted them to start? Is God in it? If God is in it then the fruit will be obvious and so will God's anointing!

Here are some things to keep in mind when you receive fresh revelation from God. Is the revelation Bible backed and Bible based? God will never contradict His Word! Is the revelation for you personally or for others? Is the revelation timely? Most revelation is meant as a "now" word not for yesterday. Pray for God to give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation along with the strategy to apply and implement the revelation He gives you. Share it with all who could benefit from receiving it. Also when you share it you speak it out loud and declare it as God's Word! Are you ready?!?
