Jesus replied, "If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing"-John 8:54 NIV
I'd like to translate that verse into-"if I do what I do for my own gratification then what good is that"? The reworking of that verse reminds me of Luke 6:32-34. Which reads as: If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. If you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. If you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners. The key part of those 2 verses are EVEN SINNERS DO THAT.
In Exodus 14:4 God told Moses that he would harden Pharaoh's heart in order for Him to gain the glory for Himself. I love how God reminded Moses that what He was going to do wasn't for the benefit of Moses and the Israelites but only for the satisfaction of His self. If that is how God felt about one of the most detrimental events mentioned in the Bible; what makes you think that the things that He allows to happen in your life aren't specifically designed for His benefit alone?
Glory and honor-reserved for our Christ, Lord and Savior only!
