For the love of a father

by Unami Magwenzi
3/14/2012 / Family

Out of my mother's womb I came,
Everyone knew I was special,
Everybody knew it, oh daddy dearest,
There was joy and excitement,
That a princess had been born,
Everyone knew it except me.

It was your job to tell me daddy,
To tell me and to show me,
That I was precious and valuable.
But you never stepped up daddy
instead you rejected,
you refused to acknowledge, me as your child,
If only you knew the damage,
daddy dearest.

They say nothing can compare,
To a mother's love for her child,
But oh daddy if only they knew,
How the female child views herself,
Is more than just through her mother's eyes.
How I needed you so, I can't help but think
if only I had known,
the love of a father.....

The things a female child will do,
For the love of a father.
Oh the things I have done,
For the love of a father.
If you had told me I was special,
I would not have chased comfort daddy .
The things I chose to pursue,
The price I payed for your absence..

The value I placed on myself,
My confidence and my strength,
That's the bit I wish you had given me.
Your protection and your comfort,
The security of a male authority
Oh how I wish my dear father....

maybe, just maybe,
I would have walked a little bit taller,
Spoke my mind a little bit louder,
and tried a little bit harder
And maybe, just maybe
I would not have settled for less
I would have reached a little bit higher
And known a little bit sooner
That I was special just because,
Just because daddy said so.

I can talk now about the damage,
It's easier now to explain when you are gone,
But oh how I wish I could turn back time,
And how I wish I could talk face to face,
How I would beg you to just play your part,
And tell me I matter,
And tell me I always did
And tell me I always will.

When all else failed, I did not crumble or stay fallen,
Because of my heavenly father I was able to stand,
And look beyond your faults, and pour out my heart,
And can still call you DADDY DEAREST.
Oh for the love of a father.
