Speaking The Truth To Someone Who Will Use Your Words to Hurt You

by Karla Downing
3/21/2012 / Relationships

Do you struggle with speaking the truth in love in your difficult relationships? If you answered yes, this biblical truth and tip will help you. It is important to speak the truth, but we need to use wisdom in deciding who we should speak to and what we should say, so we can protect ourselves.

Matthew 7:6 says, "Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces" (NIV). Yes, your truth is sacred and is as valuable as a pearl. Why is this so? Because, your truth reveals your soul, your secrets, your needs, and your heart and it is worth being treated as such. We assume that those that are close to us in difficult relationships have our best interest in mind and will treat us in ways that reflect our value, yet, it is not always true. Dysfunction and sin cause those that should love us to treat us in ways that we do not deserve. Because of this, it is important that we use discernment in dealing with all the people in our lives, even those closest to us.

People that are addicted, abusive, manipulative, emotionally unbalanced, immature, self-centered, untrustworthy, and angry aren't safe. We have to be careful with our truth around these people. If someone will use your words to hurt you or punish you, you cannot trust this person with your truth. Even if there are things you would like to say and should be able to say, don't say them. You don't owe this person your truth when they have not earned the right to it. Always consider the safety of the person you are speaking to and don't disclose things to someone who will hurt you with what you share. Speaking the truth doesn't require you to sacrifice yourself.
