MOTHER - POSITIONED TO RESCUE

by DEBORAH OSINIBI

Lessons from the life of Jochebed.
And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi. And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months. And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river's brink. Exodus 2:1-3.KJV.

From time immemorial mothers have always been God's instrument in shaping, sharpening and rescuing the children from all sorts of calamities.
As we look at the decadence that has befallen our own generation, can we say there are no mothers who carries the heart beat of God for their children anymore or there are, but do not know how to go about it?
A look into the life of Jochebed will lend us some secrets as to how we as mothers could rescue our children from the wicked decrees of the Pharaoh's of our days against our children and children across the globe.
The verse above described a woman just like me; she was a daughter, a wife just like each and every one of us. She did not have double head or additional hands than the 2 normal hands God has given us human beings.

In the days of Jochebed there was a terrible decree that sons born to the Hebrew families should be killed without any reservation. It was difficult for families that are seeking to procreate as there was a tendency that if they conceive and bring forth a son the child will be killed.

This was the situation Jochebed was, while she was pregnant with Moses and many suggestions may have come to her to go and abort the baby just like we are counsel in our own days due to some terrifying scan results.
This is the same in our generations; there are many decrees against godly parenting. We are the Jews in our time now (born again)
Against all odds, Jochebed kept her pregnancy and finally brought forth a male child which was against the law of the land (Hebrew families must not give birth to boys).

What touched my heart was not the fact that Jochebed gave birth to her son despite the humiliating decree of the king, but rather it is the phrase after, which read "she saw him that he was a goodly child".

The first thing I saw in Jochebed as a mother at a time when the nation has become a place that is not conducive for the birth of children was the fact that she "saw".
Jochebed did not settle down and weep over the decree that had been made, or right off her son because of the prevailing circumstances but rather she had an eye that sees beyond the natural.

She was endowed with eyes that see beyond the surface or beyond the now.
It is one thing to have eyes and it is another thing for the eyes to function well. Now I'm not talking of the physical eyes but the spiritual eyes that see the way God sees.

The same situation in which Jochebed found herself is what our generation has come to as well. A time when everything around us is against the birth of godly children. Yet in the midst of it we as mothers must plead to God for eyes to see what God sees concerning our children.

How did Jochebed saw the type of child Moses was? This must have definitely happen out of a relationship she had with the one who gives children. Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. Ps 127:3.
This must be the prayer of every godly mother "Lord give me eyes, and cause my eyes to see"

Now what did Jochebed saw in Moses? She saw that he was a goodly child. The definition people may have given the birth of Moses may have been "woe has come to the family of Amram", but for Jochebed she saw that Moses was good.

How I wish that this is how parents can see the good in their children despite any challenging situation.
It was this seeing that formed the basis for every other thing Jochebed did. If she had not seen, she would not have taken any good step to rescue Moses for a divine purpose.

Having seen the type of child Moses was, Jochebed received direction (she hid him three months).
Her ability to see who Moses was and not the circumstance, granted her a divine direction from the Lord. She hid Moses from Pharaoh and his agents who went about killing boys.

I pray that God will find me a mother who will learn to hide my child according to His divine direction.
How many of the children of believers of our days need to be hidden? Some needs to be hidden from the main stream schools and carefully educate them at home by their parents just because they saw something which no other eyes can see about their children.

Some may need to hide their children even from the children's activities and youth activities of their churches because the activities and group formation are not for the good of their children. Some need to hide their children from the terrible T.V programmes on screen. Parents be wise, for all that glitter is not gold!
Have I and have you played your role in hiding our children for the first 2 to 3 years of their lives before starting preschool?
If we parents have indeed laid the foundation right in our children's lives before starting school, we would be able to say thank you Lord for the wisdom He gave. Lord grant me the understanding of which area I need to hide my child.

Jochebed did not just receive of the Lord the need to hide her son but she also received the length of time in which Moses should be hid. This is where many parents get it wrong. They continue to hide the child to the point that the child miss out of what God wants him to contribute into in order to bring forth light in the midst of darkness.

Our Lord Jesus was hid in Egypt for some years till the death of Herod. Imagine if he was not hidden, there may have been no cross and that would have meant an eternal damnation.
For Jochebed she received wisdom to hide her son for 3 months. Lord please teach me how long to hide my children until they are fit to live in the next atmospheres for their lives.

The time came when Jochebed could no longer hide Moses. Understanding of this timing must have come from her relationship with the one who gave her Moses. She knew by God's divine timing that Moses though 3 months old was ready to be unveiled.

The understanding of this made her to again receive wisdom as to how to do that. She can not afford to just go and dump her baby by the hospital for social workers to pick him up nor just dump him by the way side.

She first and foremost made for him an ark of bulrushes. She coated this bulrush ark with slime and with pitch in order to protect Moses from his next environment (river).

She had knowledge of the next environment Moses will be finding himself and she knew that she may not be physically there for the child Moses; therefore she built a protecting shield round him to keep him safe from water that may be slipping through into the ark.

Even the parents of our Lord Jesus received divine instruction from the Lord as to when to bring him back to the limelight while they rescued him from herod and left for Egypt.

Lord help me to take my children to the cross, since the cross insulates us from this world. This is where all mothers must take their children to for it is in the cross of Jesus that we find protection against anything.

Jochebed knew that she may not be able to stop the flow of water but she can insulate her son against the water that may seek to come into where he dwelt.
May the Lord grant me daily wisdom as to the type of environment my children will be taken into and help me to insulate them.

Jochebed placed Moses by the river which the princess will later come to.
Lord help me to guide my children on the path that will lead to your chosen destiny for their lives.
Help me not to follow the crowd but help me as you helped Jochebed the mother of Moses to follow your still, small voice.

Motherhood is a high calling, and I am privileged amongst many women to be called a mother. Help me not to trade it for vocation, money, ministry or anything the world may seek to offer me.

It has become very clear that my duty to hide my children is God's heartbeat for me and when the time comes He will take them from underneath my roof to the next environment He has put in place for their lives.

Help me Lord to be an epitome of the mother you desire to see on earth; a mother who will regularly rescue, hide and prepare her children for divine usefulness.

This can not be by power neither can it be by intellect but by thy grace. If you help Jochebed you can help me. Lord I come to you.
I need Thee every hour, most gracious Lord;
No tender voice like Thine can peace afford.
I need Thee, O I need Thee;
Every hour I need Thee;
O bless me now, my Saviour,
I come to Thee.
