God's calling us to a deeper union with Him

by Faith C

We may search for people or places to hide in times of strife, hoping to find refuge and consolation. We can spend days, months and years yearning for that one person or place where we can let our guards down and bare it all - unburdening our deepest ache and pain and finally find peace.

We search in many corners, knocking at many doors, escaping on holidays, seeking caves of hope and peace. It's often a restless search for what we find is only temporary and we return back to the emptiness again.

My friend recently poured her heart to me and said "I am so lonely, I am so lonely." I tried to tell her that we have the Father, Son and Holy Spirit with us and He can be enough for us but her answer was "Yes but God also made us social beings." She too was aching for someone or something to fulfill her.

Scripture gently reminds us 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.'Ps 46:1 KJV

God is close at hand it reminds us. He is willing and able to help us. He is able to lift us up. He can fulfill us and set us free of all that wears us down. We do not need to search anymore, our Deliverer is here and waiting for us to turn to Him.

Come, let us go towards our God and Saviour Jesus and feel His love and consolation. His arms are open to embrace and hold us. His Hands ready to calm us and wipe away our tears. His heart full of patience and understanding, His ears ready to listen and He will give us all the time we need. He will never forsake us or leave us and we will never be lonely or needy again.

If we continually seek the arms of flesh to nurture us, if we seek material things to make us happy, we will miss out on what God is able to offer us. David found that special union with God and longed for more. He said "One thing I have desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD and enquire in His temple." (Ps 27:4 KJV)

He was a shepherd boy chosen to be King by God. His journey had struggles, failings and sin and through it all he came to know God, He tasted His love, shelter and protection and having found it, he thirsted no more.

God is calling us today to thirst for Him alone and for us to look to Him above all else. God is our Creator; He is our Father and Saviour. He loves us dearly and longs for a greater union with us. Let us not thirst anymore, for we can find all through Him, in Him and with Him.
