Motherhood is No Joke

by Linda Wattley
4/25/2007 / Family

If Mary, the mother of Jesus was to share her life's experience, she would be the first to tell us motherhood is no joke. Who would have told her she would be the mother of the Savior of the World? Her experience lets every mother know we must cut the umbilical chord and connect our own chord to God's Will if we want to reap the blessedness of the motherhood experience.

Mary's experience always grieved my spirit. Something about a mother seeing her child die such a brutal death to save the world did not settle well with me. As a mother, a first thought would be to protect and save the child from harm and danger. Of course, we would want to save his/her life. Mary could not think this she was already informed the child in her womb was the Son of God. In fact, Mary could not think like the average mother at all. From the moment of conception, she had to develop the mindset that her child does not belong to her. His Father had serious and great plans for his life.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16) This famous scripture can't be ignored nor the truth about this only begotten son's mother who knew His Father well. She trusted Him with their lives. Mary fully understood the Will of God had precedence over her will for her son's life. She did not interfere with his destiny.

Mary was not the only mother I knew that displayed such trust in God's will. My mother-in-law, Mrs. Willie Mae Wattley, demonstrated such poise and respect for God's Will; it sent me on a journey to be the mother God expects His women to be. I had to call and tell her that her only son was t killed in an automobile accident. She did not shed a tear. I assumed she was in shock. Later, I learned God revealed to her twenty years ago it was not her will, but His will to be done in her life. It was during a time her only daughter almost died from an unexplained illness that left Mrs. Wattley mentally and emotionally drained. After weeping and begging God to save her daughter, she surrendered and in that surrendering her daughter miraculously lived. From that day forward, she lived in the Will of God.

Ironically, twenty years later, I had to release my lack of desire for my son going to the war in Iraq. I remember my heartfelt struggle of not accepting this for his life. God plainly spoke to me and told me He had my son. From that day forward, I experienced a deeper and stronger walk with God. On Easter Sunday, my son's convoy was ambushed by insurgents. He was the first soldier to return fire. Everybody had frozen in shock. It was their first real contact with unfriendly fire. They said if my son had not fired back, everyone would have been killed. Thank God, they all lived.

I learned to cut the umbilical chord from my son and spiritually connected my own chord to God. Not my will Lord, but thy will be done. It is no joke being a mother, but it is an awesome and blessed experience when you know God. Hallelujah!
