Prayer for Our Nation

by
4/28/2007 / Prayers

Our military personnel

(Deuteronomy 31:6; Psalms 119:114)

Heavenly Father, we come to you this day asking you to protect all of our military personnel around the world. Help them be strong and courageous, not to be afraid or to tremble at their enemies, for You, O Lord God are their hiding place and their shield. They wait for Your word. Let evildoers depart from them so they may observe Your commandments. Sustain them according to your word, that they may live. And do not let them be ashamed of their hope. Uphold them that they may be safe, that they may have regard for Your statutes continually. Help them to be able to say with the Apostle Paul, "What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?"

Father, be with all the leaders in our military forces. Give them wisdom to know what to do and courage to do what they know must be done.Put a shield of protection around our military forces everywhere. Give them peace and patience. Bring them safely home in your time. While we await their return, give peace and comfort to their families and friends, who miss them greatly.

Healing of the land

If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people, and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayer offered in this place. (2 Chron 7:13-15, NASB)

Heavenly Father, Your people in this place come to you, calling upon Your name, humbling themselves, praying, and seeking Your face. Lord, as Your ear was attentive to the prayers offered in the temple in Solomon's day, we now ask that Your ear be attentive to the prayers offered in this place.

Father, where there is too much or too little rain, sunshine, heat, or cold, let there be just enough. Let the crops grow to maturity and be harvested in their time. We confess, O God, that we have not, as a nation, taken care of the land as we should. We have overworked it and polluted it, just as we have polluted the air around us. Forgive us, Father, for our failure to be good stewards of this land that you have given us. Help us, this day, to change our behavior, to become the good stewards you want us to be. Please heal our land.

God's protection of our land

(Psalms 7:10; Isaiah 54:14a; Isaiah 32:17-18; Isaiah 54:14b-15; Psalms 121:1; Psalms 46:1; Psalms 4:8)

Father, our shield is with You, who saves the upright in heart. Establish us in righteousness, O God. And the work of righteousness will be peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness and confidence forever. Then Your people will live in a peaceful habitation, and in secure dwellings and in undisturbed resting places.

Keep us far from oppression, and let us not fear. Keep us far from terror; let it not come near us. If anyone fiercely assails us, we know it will not be from You, and whoever assails us will fall.

From where shall our help come? Our help comes from You, O Lord, who made heaven and earth. You, God, are our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. In peace, we will both lie down and sleep, for You alone, O Lord, make us to live in safety.

President and his advisors

(James 1:5 ; Psalms 119:105 ; Proverbs 16:25 ; Proverbs 21:1; Proverbs 29:12)

O God, we know that You give wisdom generously and without reproach to all who ask it of you. On behalf of our President, his advisors, and all of our elected officials, we ask You to give them all wisdom.

Let Your word be a lamp to their feet and a light to their path. Guide them in Your way and keep them from the way which seems right to a man, but in the end leads to death.

Lord, we know the President's heart is like channels of water in Your hand and that You turn it wherever You wish. Keep his heart turned toward You, O Lord. Help him to seek and to find godly counsel among his advisors. Let him not pay attention to falsehood.

Help our President to do Your will, O Father, no matter what the personal or political consequences are. Help him to always ask, "Lord, what do You want me to do" and then do what You lead him to do.

Elected officials

(Proverbs 29:2, 7; John 16:13)

Father, among our elected officials across this nation are those who have the righteousness of Christ, and for that we rejoice. Where there are wicked officials, we groan, for we know that they do not understand the concern of the righteous for the rights of the poor. But You have sent Your Spirit of truth to guide Your people, Father, and for that we are grateful.

Judges

(Proverbs 31:9)

For our judges, we ask God, that you will instill in them a reverence and respect for You and the life You created on this earth. Help them to judge righteously, and to defend the rights of the afflicted and the needy. Help them to interpret the law, rather than to make the law. Turn the judiciary back, O God, to their duty of protecting the Constitution, by interpreting it as our founding fathers meant it, not according to the whims of society today.

Father, there are dozens of vacant judgeships in the Federal court system because of delays in the U.S. Senate. We ask that You bring an end to those delays and let the full Senate vote on the nominations quickly. Please give wisdom to our Senators as they carefully consider the qualifications and wisdom of the nominees.

Spiritual life of our nation

(Ephesians 6:18 ; Romans 12:21; Psalms 119:18; 2 Timothy 3:5; Psalms 33:12; Prov 14:34; Romans 1:29; 2 Peter 3:9; 2 Corinthians 4:3; Romans 10:13)

Help us, Father, with all prayer and petition to pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, to be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints.

Do not let us be overcome by evil, but help us to overcome evil with good. Open our eyes, that we may behold wonderful things from Your law. May we once again honor You as our God and be blessed by You.

O God, we know that righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people. We confess O Lord, that as a nation we have taken our eyes off Jesus and have become entangled in the sins of this world, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice. We are gossips, slanderers, haters of You, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, and unmerciful. Yet You loved us so much You gave your only Your Son that whoever believes in Him might be saved.

We confess as well, the sins of pornography, abortion, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, child abuse, homosexuality, and adultery. We know, O Lord, that among us are people who habitually commit these sins.

We confess all these sins, Father, and ask you to forgive us, and to show us the way You would have us go.

Lord, we know You are not slow about Your promise, as some count slowness, but are patient toward us, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

Pour forth Your Spirit upon this nation, O God, and draw all men unto Yourself. Let a revival break forth across this nation, the likes of which has never been seen. Rich, middle class, poor; red, yellow, black, white, young, old, Southerners, Northerners, Easterners, Westerners. Let people from all races, from all socioeconomic statuses, all ages, and from all parts of the country come to You and have their eyes opened to the Truth. Let them see that Your Son is the way, the truth, and the life.

Let the unbelievers in this land not be blinded by the god of this world so that they may see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of You, O God. Let them call on the name of the Lord and be saved.

In the name of our Savior, Jesus the Christ, we pray. Amen.
