Called of God

The Bible records several fascinating accounts of what we know as 'calls'; these are events that happened famously to people like Abraham, Moses, Joshua, Samuel and so on. They were mostly prophets and leaders, but no matter how different they were in circumstance and era, there was a common element a sense of their own unworthiness and inability, contrasted with the worth and power of the One who was calling them. Take Jeremiah for example. He was the son of a priest in the land of Benjamin. When the word of the Lord comes to him it comes with clarity. He had been chosen before his birth to be a prophet to the nations.(1:5) His response is natural and not unlike Moses: 'Ah, Lord God!' and then he proceeds to point out his limitations and unsuitability.
Like Jeremiah, we have been called today; not necessarily to be God's spokesmen to the nations, although if you go into any city and talk to people about Jesus, you may well find yourself in that position, with so many people from different countries of origin today, as in any city. You will probably not be required to argue with theologians, although you may be asked to say why you believe what you believe. Our calling is specifically to be saints, (1Corintians 1:2) servants (Philippians 2:5) and students (2Timothy 2:15) of the Word. We are called to belong to God's people (1 Peter 2:9); to be familiar with prayer as a privilege and a weapon you can look those references up for yourselves!
So let us look at that again saints, servants, students, people who belong and are committed to one another and to prayer this is our holy calling, and there is so much more: ambassadors of Christ, living letters, sons (and daughters) of God, reconcilers, believers, disciples, witnesses, lovers of good and lovers of God, examples of godliness, bearers of fruit and bringers of souls, glorifiers, encouragers, refreshers; the list goes on. What it brings us back to is that same phrase of Jeremiah's, 'Ah, Lord God! I am not...'
If Jeremiah and company were called to speak truth to the nations, empowered and directed by the Spirit of God, the call has not changed. We are so much more than we are not. The fact is, in order to live for God, we must recognise that our own ability and worthiness of such a high calling, are, in fact, irrelevant. The Lord has called us, touched our lips and our hearts, set us apart for Himself; is He going to stop there? No, He calls and He equips. It really is, as Matt Redmond has said, 'All about You, Jesus'. We are simply called to obey, trust and let God make us into something that we could never have even dreamed of being, to His glory.
This is much more than the truth about the spiritual reality which you have inherited as a believer in Christ. The practical application is astounding. Since you have been called to be all of these things and God Himself is committed to making this happen, you are free from the need to achieve; you are released from the pressure of having to accumulate wealth or reputation or friends in order to prove that you are worth something to somebody. You are. God says so. End of. Let me finish this thought with the word that I am told our great predecessor, Adam said, when he first set eyes on Eve: 'Wow!'
