A Priceless Gift

by Don Pedal
6/08/2012 / Christian Living

What is the priceless gift that enables us to live each day fully? We have the same amount of it no matter who we are or how prominent in our community. It is priceless because, when we run out of it, nothing else matters. Our bank account, retirement fund, 401K, fame, fortune, do not mean a thing.
The precious gift God gives us each day is time. Carl Sandburg is known for saying that "Time is the coin of life, be careful how you spend it." How we invest this precious gift determines our destiny and makes a big difference in the quality of our life.
Look around you and observe how our culture typically uses time. See if we might find some lessons we can learn. Is there a correlation between our choices in spending time and the results of those choices?
What do these choices have to say about us as individuals? We might find that how we use our time is not an abstract or vague idea but affects the quality of our life. As we examine ourselves to see how we use time, we can ask ourselves if we have wasted it and in what way. How much time do we spend in front of the TV, computer screen or on the telephone? We will begin to learn something about ourselves and start thinking of changes we could make.
Enemies of time
Meditating on our use of this precious gift of time will lead us to consider constructive changes starting with attitude.
As we decide to change our attitude towards time, we discover that our old habits and feelings go to work on us. Change is not easy.
In our culture, busyness rears its formidable head. Busyness opens the door for procrastination. We really mean to make changes as soon as we get the time. Probably tomorrow might work, next week, and so goes our determination. I will think about it as soon as I take care of these urgent problems. Maybe I will check into it after the playoffs, vacation, visiting relatives, feel better, get more energy etc. Our success will depend on our determination to improve our life.
Close to busyness, as an enemy of time, is urgency. How much do we put off until we take care of urgent problems? We have to learn to distinguish between urgent and important. Urgent things are not always important. How can we learn to tell the difference? Only you can tell the difference. Ask yourself, is this something that I consider urgent or is it the result of pressure from someone else? Is it a crisis? Some people, living from crisis to crisis, are many times reactive people who put out life's brush fires, one after another, as they occur. Only you can evaluate and decide if there is a real need for urgency.
Have you ever used procrastination in dealing with unpleasant problems? It feels so good to say, "You know, I just plain do not feel like dealing with this right now" or "I will take care of this later when I have more time". In delaying to deal with a problem it grows and takes much more time later going from important to urgent.

Why are our choices of how we use our time so important?
Our time is a gift from God, precious, limited and easily wasted.
How we use our time can affect the direction of our lives, our health, prosperity, mental health and attitude. When we live in a constant crisis mode and are always rushing about, our bodies react with sleeplessness, high blood pressure, aches, pains and a general feeling of chaos in our lives. We feel tired and find it difficult to make wise decisions or try to change things in our life. Our work becomes more difficult, in quality and quantity. We become more vulnerable to using alcohol, drugs and other means to find the peace and calm we long for.
Take the time to decide what is truly urgent and what is important and gets your attention. You may find that your urgent list will gradually diminish upon examination. Learn to be proactive and not reactive in managing your life. If you choose to remain reactive you will be acted upon by the forces the caused your problems originally.

Is there anything we can do to change this vicious cycle? We can start by giving God the respect and time He deserves. He loves you and longs to have a daily close relationship with you. How else can you know His will if you never talk to Him? How can He heal you from the battering life has given you? Listen to Him and give Him time to minister to you. You will find peace in His presence and look forward to walking with Him each day. He will give you his Holy Spirit to guide and encourage you each day.

It is all up to you. How much do you really value this precious gift given to you each day?

As a senior citizen, I am dedicated to serving the Lord through sharing my experiences and insights with other believers. My primary focus is upon being an disciple of Jesus and, in being one, I can help others to find their spiritual way also.
