Some time during the age of enlightenment, or as some people would say because of the age of enlightenment, the attitude of people changed because of the onslaught on the established church that spread to all sectors of human activity. People forget that at one time science was taught as a subset of religion and all scientists were believers whether overtly or not and many great scientists were preachers and had serious knowledge of theology. However much you may like the church if you spend quality time researching its development you will be forced to accept that the church under the umbrella of Rome had overstepped its God-given mandate and become corrupt, domineering in politics, greedy for gain and its leaders obsessed with materialism and status to the extent that they had become imperial monarchs in all but name and lived a life of palatial grandeur and excess.
In truth the leaders of the church had become rotten and oppressive. This Paul foresaw and accurately prophesied in his moving farewell to the churches in Asia Minor (present day Turkey) when he said, "For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears." (Acts 20:29-31) Paul KNEW the danger posed by perverse leadership and his warning came to its ultimate fruition around the time of the Enlightenment that occurred in Europe and European colonies in the 17th century when intolerance, superstition and human right abuses by church and state were at its zenith.
Like every rotten system in history that has been overthrown the tendency has always been to throw out the good with the bad; to eject the baby and the bathwater so to speak and this is precisely what happened during the Enlightenment. The leadership of the church was seen as fetid and they were upholding a rotten and repressive form of state politics where the high and mighty lived well and all the others eked out a miserly living. Because of their close association and intermeshing with rancid politics when the time came for liberalization, as it duly did, the people of the world down-graded the church and it no longer held the esteemed position it once did. The down-grade also occurred between religion and science with science emerging as a disciple in its own right and not a subset of religion and under the patronage of the church. This is where the linkage between science and religion has been permanently severed and science has not lost any time, like countries freed from their colonial masters, in decrying, disrespecting and rejecting all things Christian.
There are two major things that scientists will absolutely NEVER accept because, should they do so, they will undermine forever a lot of their quasi-science that masquerade unashamedly as proper science and what Paul described as science so called. (1Timothy 6:20) Scientists can never accept creation and in particular that the universe was created by God through his Word. And second scientists will never accept miracles no matter how plentiful and how real because this would demolish so many of their bogus theories.
Let us explore further and see where this leads us.
The Bible says, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." (Genesis 1:1). It was created by the second person of the Trinity, Jesus Christ, "He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not." (John 1:10) and the modality was not chance or accident but the spoken word, "By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth." (Psalm 33:6)
Scientists says that the world was created by chance, an accident that produced the "big bang" and they say that Biblical miracles are not true and if they occurred they can be explained naturally and not super-naturally.
No one in their right mind will ever assert that science is nonsense for it is through science, more correctly through the application of scientific principles, that we can drive a car around corners without it toppling over, we can fly heavy airplanes through the skies safely, we can replace defective human organs and all such like. But scientists are famous for their willful blindness and will disregard any evidence not in keeping with their dogma.
The bedrock of scientific reality is their attachment to "scientific method" a system of inquiry that is empirical where the result is used to reject or confirm a hypothesis. Nearly all scientists accept the hypothesis of the "big bang" and yet nobody has ever come within a trillion light years of proving it. All they can say is that it happened and that is their proof.
Now here is their dilemma. To prove the big bang happened they will have to start from nothing and that is impossible for only God can start from nothing and produce something. Wherever the scientists begin from they will always be starting with something because even if they built some structure and sucked it empty, the contents might be empty but the structure containing the emptiness will still be there. They will also be starting with all the inputs of technology especially tools and they will be doing all this in real time and not like God in eternity. The bottom line is that scientists can never prove the obnoxious theory of the "big bang" and it should be jettisoned from scientific orthodoxy but they will go on spending billions of dollars from now until world's end and still end up with the spurious proof of their endeavour; it just happened. If scientists were truly intelligent, as opposed to merely intellectual, they would accept that God created the world and afterwards something happened (just as the Bible says) and go from there and let the peripheral scientists waste their time pursuing "big bang" theories. "Canst thou by searching find out God?" (Job 11:7) would then become merely an academic exercise in philosophical dialogues.
But more interesting and revealing of this dichotomy between science and religion has to do with scientist's rejection of Biblical miracles. Never in the history of the world has willful blindness been so apparent; a willful blindness far more staggering that in the case where the first Rodney King Trial jury found no evidence of police brutality.
The problem here is what some have called "scientific imperialism", science going beyond the limits of its capabilities and into areas where it is patently and eternally clueless and making assertions more to do with dogma than reality.
We could start with the raising of Lazarus from the dead or the feeding of the five thousand but no, let us begin with another miracle to start the ball rolling. The miracle is called "The Healing of the Blind Man" and it is found in John, "And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?...When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam...He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged? Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he. Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened? He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight." (John 9:1-11)
Now let us try to understand this miracle in all its ramifications.
The man was blind from his birth, his neighbours and hundreds of people knew it and the authorities not willing to accept eye witnesses' account called his parents and they confirmed it. (John 9:20)
The man was healed, his blindness was removed and everybody could see that the man could now see, the man confirmed he could see and the authorities saw for themselves that he could see. (John 9:10)
The man who was now sighted was asked how come he could now see and he said, "A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight." (John 9:11)
There is in existence over two hundred and thirty manuscripts translating the original Greek New Testament and every translation whether it is the Coptic version, the Ethiopic version, the Syriac version, the Sahidic version, the Armenian version, the Gothic version, the Persic version, the Slavonic version, the Arabic version, and all of the others contain this miracle exactly as told here. The facts of this blind man being healed were never in dispute by the authorities who were the declared and implacable enemies of Jesus Christ. And never once was it claimed that Jesus was taking credit for something he did not do. The only people that are claiming that this miracle, along with all the other fully witnessed and confirmed miracles, did not happen are the willfully blind or spiritually dead and it is so sad that many scientists are among that number.
It matters not one whit to believers what scientists believe for they can neither challenge successfully the veracity of the Holy Scriptures that has withstood scrutiny for centuries nor can they impact the trajectory of our faith which curves unfailing towards heaven where abides not a creed nor a set of laws but a person most glorious; God Almighty.
