The Hall of Doors

by Lewis E. Thomas
10/03/2012 / Poetry

One night I had a dream. In my dream I found myself standing in an awesome Hall of Doors. The hallway descended at a downward angle as far as my eye could see seemingly with no end. There were doors on the left and doors on the right of the great Hall periodically as I was compelled to move down the hall. Each door had a name on it such as: Door to Betrayal, Door to Adultery, Door to Riches, Door to Drunkenness, Door to Lies, there were doors as far as my eyes could see. They were almost all doors to sin. I knew from within my heart that I had been through many of these doors already. I neared a door called Door to Lust and I just had to enter. As I reached to open the door it opened of its own accord. I spent many years behind this door. I realized that once inside these doors all the exits merely led me back to the Hall of Doors. The hall grew darker as I descended increasingly downward. Just where did this hallway end? Occasionally I would come to a door marked "Door to Eternal Life." I tried to open the door but it would not budge and a voice would say, "You must use the appropriate key". What did this mean? Use the appropriate key? I had no key to enter nor did I know where to find one. I felt a need to escape the Hall of Doors but I could not find the Key! The years went by fast as I entered many of the doors during my descent. I always reentered the Hall of Doors with an empty feeling in my soul, a hollow void that I could not seem to fill. I tried many times to open the "Door to Eternal Life" but always got the words: "You must use the appropriate key!" At last I came to a great door at the end of the Hall of Doors. On this door was written "Point of No Return" and it too opened of its own accord. I now faced two final doors, one was marked "Door to Eternal Damnation" and the other marked "Door to Eternal Life". The door marked "Eternal Damnation" opened of its own accord and I heard horrible screams from within and I saw smoke and flames in the distance. I tried desperately to open the door marked "Eternal Life" but again it would not budge and the voice said, "You must use the appropriate key." I turned to run back up the Hall of Doors but the great door quickly closed trapping me allowing no escape. Visions of my past life flashed before me and I was so ashamed of the way that I had lived. My mind raced back in time back to when I was a child and I remembered going to Sunday school at church. Suddenly I remembered something my Sunday school teacher had read to us from the Bible. It said that Jesus held the keys to Death, Hell and the Grave. If Jesus held those keys he must also hold the key to the "Door to Eternal Life". I quickly cried out to God and asked Him to forgive me for the way that I had lived, that I was very sorry. I repeatedly cried out the name "Jesus!", "Jesus!", "Jesus!" and suddenly the "Door to Eternal Life" began to open. As the "Door to Eternal Life" began to open the "Door to Eternal Damnation"began to close. Jesus met me at the door and escorted me up a stairway of gold into Heaven. I said Lord: "I'm sorry I waited so long." He said "I'm sorry too because you always had the key with you, you just never used it until now! The key is faith in me!"
