Grandfather

My memory takes me back to my Grandfather's side
He spoke of simple things that made him beam with pride.

He told me how he rejoiced on the day that I was born
Even though a storm that day had destroyed all his corn.

He said he thanked the Lord for such a one as I
He said he cherished every moment I was by his side.

He explained many truths to me concerning life
And how blessed a man is to find a Godly wife.

He taught me about Honesty, Integrity and Compassion
Giving during hard times when food had to be rationed.

He explained how important my word was as a man
That when I made a promise to do all to make it stand!

He explained how a gentle heart could reach out and heal
On his knees, I often saw him praying in his old cornfield.

One day I slipped up on him quietly when he was in prayer
Grandpa did not have a clue that I was behind him there.

I listened as he prayed to the One beyond the sky
These are the words he spoke and that made me cry:

"Lord, I come and humbly kneel before your face.
I have a Special need for your Amazing Grace!

Please watch over my grandson and give him a good start.
Guide him throughout his life and give him a good heart!

Please keep him from sin and help him lay aside every weight.
Because soon I'll be waiting for him inside Heaven's Gate!

Please guide his footsteps and keep him on a righteous path.
Let him daily follow Jesus and save him from your wrath!

Mold him into a godly man and in the world let him shine
As a beacon to the lost so use this grandson of mine.

Let him make us proud with the life he lives below
And let him tell others of Jesus everywhere he goes!

Let him follow a path of kindness spreading godly love.
Remind him when I'm gone that I'm waiting up above!
Amen!"
