Why Believe?

by Jeffrey Snell
5/11/2007 / Devotionals

Someone may ask me, "Why do you believe in Jesus when there's so much you don't know or understand?" To that I say, unknown things will always be with each of us, regardless of what or whom we trust. Atheists, Agnostics, Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc. all encounter and struggle with events which we do not understand. What each chooses to put their trust in can not be dependent upon the ceasing of that struggle. If I condition my faith singularly on possessing perfect understanding and knowledge, I am stating I will place my faith in no thing and no one, including myself, since my condition is unattainable. This is a horrible place to live! Human beings can not subsist there; we despair deeply, because hope is the blood of our souls, and to disdain or dismiss that need is akin to mocking our need for water to survive--utterly futile thinking.

My answer to the question, then, is that there is indeed much I don't know or understand; in fact, as my knowledge grows, so does my amazement at the "un-known." But that is a good thing! This is not a truth that demeans me; on the contrary, it excites me, because the paradox of the universe's incomprehensible expanse and sub-atomic complexity testifies to a great Initiator, an enthusiastic Designer, a joyful Artist wielding a baffling power entirely outside my intellectual and physical boundaries.

Not the least example of this power is raising a man to a new kind of unending life who was dead, bloodless and buried, for a day and a half! Add this historical event to the grand creation of all things, from the most miniscule component of a cell to the largest galaxy, to light itself. Finally, cover it all with the fervent desire of this Artist to be intimate with ordinary me, one of His many works! I say, if anyone is worth putting my faith, my whole trust, in, it is He.

Writing since 2000, I live in the Seattle area with my wife and three children. My passion is to draw others to a more intimate knowledge & love of Jesus through fiction & non-fiction. To contact me, you may send an IM from my FW profile page or visit my website below.
