The Whore and The Scarlet Cord

by Lewis E. Thomas
10/18/2012 / Poetry

Rahab was a prostitute in the city of Jericho
All the men of the city she did well know.
She often looked out her window on the wall
When she saw a stranger to him she would call.
Suddenly one day there was a knock on her door
She ran quickly, something she'd never done before.
She opened the door and let the two spies come in
She felt a presence that revealed all her sin.
These men were different than all that she knew
They told her their plans what God would soon do.
She began to shake, her heart filled with fear!
She had heard of Israel's God, now He was so near.
She said, "I must hide you quickly the King seeks your face!"
When the King's soldiers came they found not a trace.
"I've heard of your God and I believe He is real"
"So Please I beg you!" "Lets make a deal!"
"I saved your lives and I've shown kindness to thee"
"Please save my father's house and all dear to me!"
She let them down from her window by a scarlet cord
They rushed to the Jordan which they now must ford.
Before they left they promised her much
"All those in your home our God will not touch!"
"Hang that scarlet cord from the window of your house"
She obeyed, got her family; they stayed quiet as a mouse!
Israel's army began to march seven times around
A brave man in Jericho was not to be found.
This kind of fear Jericho never had felt
And with the blow of each Ram's horn
All their hearts would just melt!
They all clung to each other near the window with care
They had to be sure the scarlet cord was still there.
Rahab's old daddy was as scared as could be
He kept shaking the scarlet cord and he
Hoped that Joshua's soldiers would see!
They all cried to Israel's God in one accord
For them life and death lay in that scarlet cord.
Joshua's army shouted and God knocked all the walls down
Israel killed every man, woman, and child to be found.
The walls of Jericho Israel's God did lay low
Save for one spot with a small window.
With the fire and the smoke you hardly could see
The old man in the window who shouted with glee!
They all worshipped and they praised the Lord
For saving them all with a whore's scarlet cord!
