Study in Zechariah

by Don Costello

Zechariah 2:10

Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the LORD.

1. "Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee,"

a. When I look at the beginning of this verse, I am reminded of Zechariah 9:9 that says, "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee:" Within that comparison I can't help but see a division, a difference between "I come" and "I will dwell in the midst of thee". When Jesus first came as a man to die for our sins, the Scripture says, "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zionthy King cometh unto theehaving salvation". When he comes the second time, well I'll save that for the next verse.

2. "saith the LORD."

a. This is the LORD speaking first person, and just so there is no misunderstanding, we will look at the Hebrew word for "LORD".

b. LORD (3068 * Yehovah) (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God: Jehovah, the Lord.

c. So there is no question about who is speaking here. It is God Almighty.
Zechariah 2:11

And many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto thee.

1. "And many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people:"

a. There are numerous verses in the Old Covenant that show the Gentiles coming to faith in the one true God, and this is just one of them.

1). Isaiah 2:2, 3 "And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD'S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem."

2). Cp. also, Isaiah 49:22; 55:5; 60:3; 66:23; Zechariah 8:22. These are some of them.

b. The trouble is that chronologically they all could be placed in the beginning or in the millennial kingdom. Even my favorite of the ones that I know of is no different, it also could be placed in the Millennial kingdom, because the verses before them, Jeremiah 16:14-18, are speaking of the end time regathering of Israel into their land.

1). Jeremiah 16:19-21 "O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit. Shall a man make gods unto himself, and they are no gods? Therefore, behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know mine hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is The LORD."

c. In light of these passages, the warning of the Apostle Paul to the Jewish leaders in Rome, immediately after his being brought to Rome for trial is very powerful.

1). Acts 28:23-29 "And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening. And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not. And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers, Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive: For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it. And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves."

d. Not many in the Jewish community saw it coming. Even those in the Messianic Jewish community were shocked when they realized that God had opened the door of salvation to the Gentiles, See Acts 10:44-48; Acts 11:18.

e. A fascinating element in this is in at least two of the passages that foretell of the Gentiles coming to faith in the one true God Jehovah tell why they are coming.

1). Isaaiah 55:5 "Behold, thou shalt call a nation that thou knowest not, and nations that knew not thee shall run unto thee because of the LORD thy God, and for the Holy One of Israel, for he hath glorified thee."

2). Isaiah 60:9 "Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, unto the name of the LORD thy God, and to the Holy One of Israel, because he hath glorified thee."

3). Remember the prayer Jesus prayed in John 17 right before his going to the garden to lay down his life for our sins?

4). John 17:1 "These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:"

5). John 17:4, 5 "I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was."

6). Folks, that's the gospel! That's why the nations have come to the one true God. Within the death and resurrection of Jesus, both the Father and Jesus are glorified. Within the death and resurrection of Christ both the LORD thy God and the Holy One of Israel are glorified. Two of the three persons of the Godhead being "one" with each other, just as Deuteronomy 6:4 and John 10:30 declare!

2. "and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto thee."

a.Isn't this interesting! The LORD God Jehovah has sent the LORD God Jehovah to dwell in the midst of the Jewish people and they are going to know it, because "all Israel shall be saved", Romans 11:26, after they "look upon me whom they have pierced". Then He will dwell in the midst of them because, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be there God." Revelation 21:3.
