For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, a not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect.
(Hebrews 10:1 New KJV)
Year after year, the Old Testament priests passed beyond the veil to make an atonement for sin. Though the above scripture reveals that those sacrifices could not bring the people to spiritual maturity or completeness (perfection), God accepted those rituals as a valid offering.
With a shedding of blood, He forgave the offenses that were done against Him. Can you imagine it?
The blood of a simple earthen creature was sufficient enough to a holy God that He forgave men their sins! He washed away the offense. He offered His grace and mercy because of that animal's blood being spilled as an acceptable sacrifice.
Now enter Jesus Christ, the very Son of God. He is the True and Eternal Sacrificial Lamb. He is the Perfect and Final Sacrifice to end all other sacrificial rituals. His is the very blood of God poured out on the cross for you and me!
If the blood of an animal was sufficient for the forgiveness of sin, how much more can God's own blood wash, cleanse and purify us? This question isn't one that I present of my own thinking; the bible has already asked it.
For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh,
how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
(Hebrews 9: 13, 14 New KJV)
