A crowd at a wedding, one Year older

by Donald Standeford
1/01/2013 / Poetry

A park of roses by a murky river
Near a stand of ancient oak trees
And the lovely lilacs were written
In spring's festive furnace;
And the summer's labors bear forth
Fruit as the year comes
Into fruition, ladies in waiting
Wear long scarlet dresses, young
Still in wonder, smiling in hope
Of becoming brides soon, very soon,
Wary of the Middle Ages, see
Bride shine in summer sun
Tiny ring bearer, new grin on his
Pleasant little face, and flower girl
Seems to be dancing in her strides;
Both about to pass into ceremony's
Way of making you one year older;
The father holds tightly to bride
When he releases, there goes the
Child, and he is no more father
Of only one, as the grandparents
Sitting on the folded chairs
And gazing in wonder where went
The little girl who stole their
Thunder? They're left to ponder.

The best man, he is losing a friend,
Thinks of his own life, how will it
End? While the boy beside him, taller
By a foot, has no idea what all this
Means, as he ogles the girls who arrived
In a black limousine. While photographer
Counts this her fourteenth wedding,
Wonders where time's gone, how
She loved this scene so much, how
Each ceremony she feels one year older.
The groom stands nervous, hopefully
Waiting, recalling his vows, soon, soon,
All this will be done; is he ready to become
With another person, throat dries, how
Will he ever be able to speak? And
Pastor counts three this month,
The next appointment in his busy, busy
Schedule on his busy, busy mind. Then
The bride

By her father's side enters blushing,
A veil over her head, the white train
Caressing the hastily laid carpet,
Everyone swept up in rapturous wonder;
In their minds they stand, salute,
This youth so young in body and dreams,
Of God she's drawn succor, innocence,
Life from seed in nature spent, her smile
Radiates, enraptured in the moment;
With a pause she is finally stilled
Before the altar to make her vows;
The moment brings singing only angels
Hear, songs of each heart involved,
A dance is this ceremony to her young
Heart, a dance to her God, dearer
Than the sunshine that lights her step,
Fairer than family or friends, roses
Or triple layer cakes, punch bowls
Filled with tangy surprises, a miracle
Of nature, two become one, and two
Become three, so the dance continues
Into multiplicity, a joy to be alive
For such a celebration

And we all in waiting feel the glorious heights
Of life in new beginning, past blends to now,
This measuring mark, growth in stages,
It's what the living do, in ceremony, celebrating
Groundbreaking moments all that fuss, so
We watch bride and dream of beauty lasting,
Groom, and remember youth and its friends,
And as we participate we grow one year older
And one year older, we become the dream.
