City high on a hill
by Donald Standeford
1/18/2013 / Poetry
The city set high on a hill
It shone so radiant, perfect, pure;
The narrow way so clearly shone;
You had to walk up it alone,
Shake off damp river death
From your body to be pure, new,
Clean; murky river I remember
Its deeps ungentle thought
That it bought my immortal soul,
When I lay at bottoms low;
This light fished me up from
Deeps, pulled me to the shore
To rest, and as I lay upon bank
Dreaming, I knew I had peace
And rest, newly delivered,
I pushed onward, upward to
The city of heavenly light;
Pulse of society drew me there;
I was naked, unashamed;
I'd made it, was finally there,
And in the shadows of depth,
I had prayed "My Lord to Keep"
Me from damnation of eternal
Soul, freed from speckles
On my body's soulful skins,
Separate my soul from sin; only
At the city exploding with light,
Where darkness has fled from,
All acts compounded by Love,
Health and life.
