A Christian and a Gun
by Rick King
1/19/2013 / Christian Living

By: Rick L. King
January 19, 2013

The debate over gun ownership is quite the heated topic these days because of all the shootings that have occurred. This article is not about guns for hunting or target practice. It is about whether a Christian needs a gun for other reasons.

I want to share with you what the Holy Spirit has shared with me. This is all scriptural. If you believe the Bible and what the Word says then even though part of you may not like this, you cannot refute scripture. If on the other hand you really don't believe God's Word as truth, then you may take issue with what I am saying.

God's real plan for a Christian is really based on this scripture.

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

God desires a Christian to be crucified with Jesus. In other words we are to be dead to the flesh and self. Jesus is supposed to be living in and through us. The only real right a dead man has is his last rite. If we are dead to self, then why would a dead man need a gun to protect self? He is already dead and it is only Christ living in and through him. I cannot picture Jesus via the Holy Spirit needing a gun to protect self. The Holy Spirit and Jesus are all powerful and there is no weapon on earth that would intimidate them. Also why did Jesus come?

John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

Jesus came to give life, not take it away. Satan is the one that kills, steals, and destroys. Jesus would never take a gun and shoot anyone. He would not need to as His power is much greater than any gun or carnal weapon.

2Corinthians 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

Jesus in us uses spiritual weapons not carnal earthly ones. Unfortunately many Christians are using carnal weapons to fight spiritual wars. They just do not work.

So according to scripture then Jesus does not need a gun for any protection at all. His power is far greater. I know that many feel safer if they have a gun. Yet, why is that?

Luke 17:33 Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.

If we are in need of a gun for safety means that we are seeking to save our life. Our life is to be dead. Our will, desires, purposes all get crucified as we walk with the Lord so it can only be Him living in us. If seeking to protect a dead man, the person is not yet dead to self and is still walking in the flesh, not the spirit. Unfortunately much of the church has taught this all wrong or not taught this at all. God's desire for all that come to him is that they be crucified. So many are teaching things that feed the flesh and make it in control where the Word says we are to die to the flesh instead. Paul said:

1Corinthians 15:31 I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.

What was he daily dying to? He was dying to self, his fleshly carnal man. This has to be true as Paul also said:

Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Romans 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

The last verse really sounds like a command not a suggestion by Paul. He says Walk in the spirit. He does not say that we should if we want to or maybe we should. He says as an order to do this.

The real issue then is whether we are in the flesh or in the spirit? A flesh person will try to be in control of their life and always try to protect it. A person that is still in control of their life is actually walking in agreement with the devil. The devil wanted to be in control. He did not surrender his will to God. This is why he got kicked out of Heaven. A Christian must surrender their life totally to the Lord. They must allow the Holy Spirit to have complete say so over their life as it is no longer theirs. I have heard this statement over the years that I believe is very correct. He is not Lord at all if He is not Lord of all. A spirit led person is already dead and has no fear of physical death at all as they know that they are headed for Heaven. A flesh person trusts in self and walks on earth believing that the temporal is life. A spirit led person trusts in God to protect him and keep him. He knows that the eternal is the real life and if God wants him on earth that:

Isaiah 54:17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.

If it is his time to leave earth, then it is his time. This decision is the Lords, not the person with a gun. I have heard so many testimonies over the years of people that had guns pulled on them and all the sudden the assailant ran away as they saw an angel in front of the person and got scared and ran. How far can we trust God? Do we believe that if we are doing His will and allowing the Holy Spirit dominion over our life that He will keep us safe until our jobs on earth are finished?

I saw an article where it even said that a pastor ran out and bought a gun as a result of the possible ban. Was the pastor running scared? I know that he is human but you would think that a pastor would not be filled with fear and would be able to trust God with his life.

I really think that we need to examine our hearts and see if we are really trusting the Lord and not allowing satan's fear to rule instead on this issue. We are told:

2Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

The fear is not ours. A dead man cannot have fear. The fear is the devils spirit. We will not have fear if we can realize that this is true. It is not ours unless we sign on the dotted line and accept it as ours. The devil is a liar. Don't believe his lie that you are scared. The devil is scared and just wants you to think that is you. It is a demon spirit of fear and it is not you. We are to have the power, love and a sound mind. Fear takes that away from us. We are to be people of faith not fear as it takes faith to please God.

Mathew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Fear is stealing from many as they are running out and spending money for a gun as they fear that they are losing their rights or they need this for protection. This what the devil does. He kills, steals from us, and destroys. Do not give in to the devils lie as it takes your power, love, and a sound mind.

I hope that this article has given to you maybe a new way to see some things and brings a new trust and freedom to you in the Lord. That is its intent.

I am a 63 year old Born-Again spirit filled Christian, that has been saved for 30 years. Jesus found me when I was suicidal. I learned real quickly that I was powerless to be in control of my life, so I let Jesus take over. He has chosen me to be a warrior for Him. WE win, if we fight His way.
