The King and the Boy Who Cried Wolf

by Dewayne Rachels
1/21/2013 / Devotionals

Once upon a time (about 2000 years ago) in a land far far away was born the King of Peace. This king was not born in a castle, there were no midwives to help deliver this child, and his first bed was not fit for a king. Many stories told of the coming birth of this king but almost everyone forgot to watch for this time. He didn't come into the world as the scholars of that time believed he would. He wasn't born to the richest people of the land. No, He was born in the stables where animals are kept. This king's first bed was to be laid in the feeding trough of animals (manger) wrapped with blankets. He didn't get the royal welcome from the royal family. The only ones that came to see the birth of this king was the last ones that would have been welcomed to visit the average royal birth, shepherds. The shepherds didn't know to look for His coming they were told by messengers of the wondrous event who were creatures they believed to be mythical, angels. Traveling to see this king from afar were also wise men that studied and watched for the signs of the prophets regarding this birth.

This baby, born king (Jesus, if you haven't guessed by now), was not a joyous time to the rulers of the land. Instead of welcoming the birth of the Savior, King Herod ordered the deaths of hundreds of babies from the ages of two years old and under. When Jesus began His ministry he performed miracles by healing the sick, curing the blind, and casting out demons. Many gave God the glory and came to repentance but many more caused Jesus to be persecuted, stoned, called a liar, cast out of cities, conspired against, and betrayed. Jesus told his disciples that he was to die for them and be raised from the dead. However, they did not understand Him. Jesus went on to tell everyone that one day he would return for His church and at that time every eye would see, every knee would bow, and every tongue confess that He was LORD. This time would be for the judgment for those who chose not to believe on His name.

Two thousand years has passed since this day and the church still watches for his return. Satan finds many ways to take our eyes off Jesus to hinder us from spreading the Word. One major tool this beast uses is deception. Satan is the prince of lies. I have known people that are so good at telling lies that if I were standing outside enjoying the cloudless day of pure sunshine and they told me it was raining I would second guess my own knowledge. If a single human being possesses a skilled tongue of deception similar to this how much more would the Prince of Lies be able to deceive a normal person. Jesus tells us in Mat 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Mathew chapter 24 Jesus is telling us what must be fulfilled during the last days and what to expect. These false christs and prophets are so amazingly deceptive that they could almost persuade the very elect. The only way we can be sure that we do not fall into the deception is to stay in the Word, study, pray, and yes even go to church. Think about how good these liars of the world are. When you read the statement go to church did you automatically think, "I don't have to go to church to be a Christian"? Why is this? Because throughout time people professing to be Christians as well as some backslidden or weak Christians have beat people over the head with the Bible, figuratively and physically. Hundreds and hundreds of years of this have left people with a bad taste in their mouth. The book of Jude speaks of apostasy or those who try to lead others away from Christianity.

One major tool for deception is using the foundation of Christianity against Christianity. There are people who know your faith better than you and will use such devices as events, archaeological findings, or even the Bible itself (taken out of context) to deceive you and have you doubting your own beliefs. Many times we have heard in our life time that the world is going to end on a certain day. One such day is this week, 12-21-12, the last day of the Mayan calendar. Another such catastrophic event was supposed to have taken place in the year 2000. Now people are saying the year 2016. And there has been many more scare tactics in between such as the zombie apocalypse a couple years ago (if you haven't heard of it, go check it out on Google). The hardest part to believe is that people fall for this. Why? Because we have become desensitized to church because of the bad things we hear from people and everyone has a longing to believe in something. The same thing is happening to people for the coming of the Lord. We have heard so many times, "The Earth will be destroyed on this day___" or better put this way "Wolf, Wolf" and when we get there we find nothing. Hollywood ramps things up even more by using a few of the scares in movies that our own government uses such as global warming, the o-zone layer depleting, a killer asteroid, but ultimately they have a good ending. Why do people like these movies? Because some part of them knows that one day this world will end. Satan uses this to desensitize people to the Truth so they will be similar to the servant in Jesus' parable Luk 12:45 But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken; Luk 12:46 The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. Have you heard that saying misery loves company? Its always more fun to be rebellious with others than with yourself so Satan wants to deceive as many as he can.

Jesus will come back again. This is His promise and His promises do not get broken. I can't give you a day this will happen. Jesus said that no one knows the day or the time except for the Father in Heaven. I do know that Jesus said as the day is closer we will be able to see the signs. Those signs are becoming more prevalent every day. Do you know him today? Have you been living for Him lately? Remember that this world will soon pass away but even if it isn't in our lifetime continue to live for Jesus and keep looking up.
