Guard Your Heart!

by Ezekiel Olukolajo
5/25/2007 / Devotionals

Guard your heart more than anything else, because the source of your life flows from it. Pro 4:23 [God's Word Version]

The state of the heart of a man determines what happens within and around him. If the heart of a man is in crisis, he can never know or experience peace whether within or around him. It is the condition of the heart that determines everything about a man!

The heart of man, otherwise known as the inner man or the spirit man, is the real person within. It is the most vital part of man in the sense that it controls man's entire being [body and soul]. More importantly, it is the only component of man that has the ability to relate with and connect God! We cannot connect God with our body or soul, it is only with the spirit [the inner man] brought into existence by God's breath of creation we relate with God. Man's spirit [the inner man] being a direct impartation or deposit from God, possesses that ability to unite with God. As such, who and what controls our hearts are of great importance. This is the reason we are strictly instructed to guard our hearts with utmost vigilance and diligence.

Who is in charge of the heart of a man determines the life he lives, how and where he will end. The devil understands this truth quite well and that is the reason he struggles to control and rule this vital component of man at the slightest opportunity opened to him. However, each and every one of us can determine who we yield this treasured territory of our life to.

The surest way to secure our hearts is to yield them permanently to God's control and rulership. Our hearts can indeed be a spring of life overflowing with joy, peace, love and righteousness at all times only when God through His Holy Spirit reigns there. When our hearts are fully under the influence of the Holy Spirit, the presence of God will overshadow our entire being, thereby bringing into our lives the real experience of God's kingdom.

Those whose hearts have not been regenerated through the blood of Jesus Christ cannot have the soothing experience of peace; they are bound to groan under the burdens and guilt of sin since they are yet to make peace with God. The life of every man is a reflection of his heart! The heart that is under the control of the devil can never be free from bitterness, anger, immorality, pains, agony and distress.

If our hearts are intact, our lives are bound to be intact! This is the reason we should never permit any thing that will affect our hearts. As believers, we can keep our lives in a perfect state and have the real experience of God's kingdom at all time by ensuring that our hearts are totally connected to God. By this, our hearts would never be a brooding nest or home for bitterness, anger, unforgiveness, malice, hatred, grief and wickedness but a spring of life with God Himself being the source.

God is honoured only when our hearts are not shared between Him and other things of life. God is not asking for a portion of our hearts; He wants to be in total control of our entire being. It is when we yield to Him in absolute surrender that we would begin to have the blissful experience of heaven, even here on earth!

"For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace and joy in the Holy Ghost" Romans 14:7;
