Poverty: is it a blessing or a curse?

by Alfonso Abels
3/12/2013 / Christian Living

Poverty might seem, or even sound, like something that can easily be swept under the mat. Unfortunately, it is not so simple as many of us still live in spiritual poverty.

We have a great lack of the Holy Spirit`s presence in our lives. Satan really abuses this situation by using poverty as one of the channels to get into man`s inner being.

Where did it all start?

Everything started at the moment Satan and his demons were cast out of Heaven. Therefore everyone has fallen short of God's glorious holy standards for their lives. Satan thus creates a longing for the unknown. How does he do it? SIMPLE.

He introduces evil doings into our lives. By engaging yourself into these evil doings, craving for that particular channel will get worse if redemption does not step in. Sin is not just sexual sin or murder.

It includes being greedy, jealous, envious, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, child abuse, theft, fraud, etc. Sin includes our thought life too! All that we think in our imaginations is known to God. He is holy and just therefore punishes sin by death.

There are two kinds of death referred to in the Bible - physical death and eternal spiritual death.

Eternal spiritual death means going into torment in Hell forever. It means separation from God, from goodness and from the truth. It leads to eternal torment and disintegration. we are rebelling against our Creator and the Source of Life when we refuse to follow and obey God.

We lose when we rebel against the Creator .God sustains us, not the other way around!

We attack ourselves when we choose not obey God. Its like speeding - fun until you have to stand before the Judge. The sentence in this case of disobedience is also eternal death.

Jesus took our punishment for sin when He died upon the Cross. God prepared a way for sin could be dealt with - through special sacrifices.

In the Jewish sacrificial system this was a perfect animal without spot or blemish. Jesus was sinless and was the perfect sacrifice for all the sins of all people for all time.

The Bible tells us that God saw that everyone had sinned and was in danger of Hell. He decided to rescue them by sending Jesus to die instead of them.

Jesus died on the cross and went down into the world of the dead. He took our punishment fully and was raised from the dead three days later. Our sins were "nailed to the cross" and dealt with when Jesus died. Read Romans 5:8. God demonstrates His own love toward us by the death of Christ .

Anyone who believes in Him can now have their sins forgiven.

Jesus' sacrifice has provided forgiveness for everyone who wants it. Some people are too proud to want God's forgiveness. They think they can get to Heaven without the help of Jesus. They can't because they are guilty before God.

The thing about guilt is that it takes only one crime to make you guilty and deserving of punishment.

The way to become a Christian is by living the following truths. These truths are that Jesus Christ is Lord and that He rose from the dead.

The first truth says that He is boss of your life, of your family, and even of the government. Jesus Christ is the "ultimate authority" ; He must be obeyed. Jesus need to be obeyed at all times.

Who has the heart? With whom are our thoughts? Of whom do we love to converse? Who has our warmest affections and our best energies? Our thoughts are with Him. Indeed, our sweetest thoughts are of Him. All we have and are is consecrated to Him.

We cannot do otherwise. We long to bear His image and breathe His spirit. We need to do His will and please Him in all things.

There are two errors against which the children of God especially need to guard. The first is that of looking to their own works. People rather need to bring themselves into harmony with God.

Those who are trying to become holy by their own works in keeping the law, are attempting an impossibility. All that man can do without Christ is polluted with selfishness and sin. It is the grace of Christ alone, through faith that can make us holy.

Only faith makes us partakers of the grace of Christ. This enables us to render obedience. We do not earn salvation by our obedience. Salvation is the free gift of God. It is to be received by faith.

However, obedience is the fruit of faith. Read 1 John 3:5, 6. Here is the true test. We have to abide in Christ and allow His love to dwell in us. Our feelings, our thoughts, our purposes and our actions will then be in Him, our Savior.

We have to understand that our warfare against sin has ended. We shall never suffer in sin again. Our bondage to sin ended when Jesus redeemed us with His baptism and blood. All our sins ended then and there. The Son of God has expiated all our sins.

God paid for all our sins through Jesus, who set us free, forever.
What would happen to us if we were not to believe in the Word of God even though our Lord has saved us through the gospel of the water and the Spirit?

We would all be destroyed. The Bible says that the Lord has saved us from all our sins, but do you believe that this means the Lord has also saved you from all your sins?

Indeed, the Lord has at once blotted out all the sins of each and every one of us. Faith has found its centre in the believer's relationship to Jesus Christ.

Once again, remember, the fulfillment of one`s spiritual life leads to the disabilities in one`s personal life being eliminated. Spiritual poverty, the ending of it, results in the ending of physical poverty. However, nothing is possible without Jesus Christ.

Therefore befriend Jesus today. It is worth it !
