Turns Out, Not Waiting For God Is No Fun

by Todd Horne

I say I want God to lead me, to guide me, and to direct my steps. Then, again, I lie a lot. Forget moral relativity. God's process of sanctification regards only one standard _ Him. What we would perhaps consider a "little" while seeking a liberal grading on the curve, so to speak, is actually an awful lot when measured against the Holy of Holies. Little lies are big ones. Same thing.

God does not grade on the curve. In fact, God is all in. You either Pass or Fail. There is no in-between. But, if you can set yourself aside long enough, you'll be able to see how His grace affords us His mercy time and time again until we learn to seek His blessings. Actually, you can't accomplish this on your own, either. His Spirit does this for us.

All too often, I struggle with His direction. I have a difficult time knowing where I really should go and what I really should do before I begin ambling recklessly down a _ maybe any_ path, anyway.

Impatience is obviously not a virtue. Sometimes, I just want to go for the sake of going _ bored with where I am. Scared, maybe, that this moment is all there is and I can't see that it (His grace) is enough for now, or that it ever will be. Enough.

Only God knows our hearts. We do not know what we really want, what our desires truly are. Our hearts can be and usually are deceptive. Consequently, I often listen to my own thinking and feelings, sometimes wittingly and other times not so much, but almost always I pretend I am listening to God even if I know I am not because I know that is what I am supposed to do. Feeling good is not being good but why distinguish the two when you're in the dark and can't see the line that separates one from the other? Why open your eyes when you know the curtains are closed?

The consequences that are real when we don't listen almost always result in something inside of us breaking, and usually the pain caused and inflicted is immense. That's how God works. We like to blame other people, circumstances, or justify things and conditions to no end, but this is nothing but ourselves being overly dramatic. Our paths lead to destruction we've been told, if not sold. End of story.

In Isaiah Chapter 30, God's people strike out on their own. The chapter begins with Isaiah warning the people that they have gone their own way and ignored God. Do you recognize yourself in that lot? I'm all over it. But, in verse 18, we are told that God will wait for them, and show his love and compassion towards them.

Then, Isaiah says, "Right behind you a voice will say, 'this is the way should go.'"

This blew my mind. More importantly, it arrested my heart. Them are us. They are me. Go your own way. Ignore God. You are not just anyone, mind you. You are saved by Him. You belong to Him. You are a child of the King of Kings. God follows you. Down your own paths, God not only follows you, He also waits for you. He also shows his love to you and He shows his compassion to you.

Amazingly, God does all of this while you still have your back to Him.

We are rude and ignorant.

When God follows you, He's not lagging distantly behind you, either. God is right behind you. He speaks and He tells you which way to go.

Do you catch that?

We totally ignore and disregard God and go our own way, striking out impatiently on our own and justifying our actions the whole time. He lets us leave but He never lets us go. God does this for one reason, and for one reason only: because God is merciful. It has nothing to do with us, or with what we deserve.

". . . For the Lord is a God of Justice; blessed are those who wait for him."

That's the last part of Isaiah 30:18. Did you catch that? Not only to do we belong to Him and not only will He never forsake us, no matter how stubborn, hard-headed, and no matter how stupid we are in ignoring his direction and guidance, and no matter how impatient we are; but God is just. If we would just learn to wait for him, He blesses us.
