God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
Therefore we won't be afraid, though the earth changes,
Though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas;
Though the waters of it roar and are troubled,
Though the mountains tremble with their swelling.
There is a river, the streams of which make the city of God glad,
The holy place of the tents of the Most High.
God is in her midst. She shall not be moved.
God will help her at dawn.
The nations raged. The kingdoms were moved.
He lifted his voice, and the earth melted.
Yahweh of Hosts is with us.
The God of Jacob is our refuge.
Come, see Yahweh's works,
What desolations he has made in the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth.
He breaks the bow, and shatters the spear.
He burns the chariots in the fire.
"Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations.
I will be exalted in the earth."
Yahweh of Hosts is with us.
The God of Jacob is our refuge. -Psalm 46:1-11 (WEB)
As I watched the movie, "The End of the Spear," I was particularly struck by one scene involving Kimo, the first male of the tribe to become a "God-follower" and Mincaye, the hardened, vengeful leader of the tribe.
When Mincaye was suffering from a poisonous sting-ray bite and demanded his spears, Kimo brought them near to Mincaye and very deliberately broke each one so they could no longer be used in senseless fighting. My mind immediately recalled Psalm 46. Kimo did not break those spears in his own strength. God had infused Kimo with the courage and strength needed to stand against Mincaye and the rest of the tribe as he broke the spears, leaving the ends splintered and the spears unusable.
We may not have physical spears and bows, but we have verbal spears, bows, and arrows. How often do we send one of the spears or arrows flying toward the heart of a brother or sister whom we feel has wronged us? Just as God helped Kimo to shatter Mincaye's spears, He will help us to shatter our verbal spears, and break our bows and arrows. Let us lay aside the weapons we use against the body of Christ and instead let us together take up our weapons of spiritual warfare and use them against Satan and his angels.
O Father, help us this day to break the verbal bows and spears we use against Your people and replace them with deeds of love and kindness. Help us instead to put on the full armor You provide us so that we are fully prepared for the spiritual battles that come upon us. In the name of Jesus, our Commander-in-Chief, we pray. Amen
We cannot hurt our brothers and sisters if we don't pick up the weapons. Let us put aside our petty differences and jealousies and together do battle against Satan and his angels.
