Coping in the Real World - Part 3

by Jerry Ousley

"Five second rule!" Have you heard about that one? It means that someone has dropped a piece of food on the floor and if it is picked up within five seconds the germs and dirt haven't had a chance to jump on it, so it's okay to pick it up and eat it. I have to admit that I've done this before. I mean, come on now, if you accidently drop it on the floor and you pick it up right away what can possibly be wrong with it especially if it's an Oreo cookie or something else real good like that.

I remember many years ago when I worked at a sawmill. The floors of the building we worked in were made of you guessed it sawdust. We'd sweat and the sawdust flying from that big saw would get all over you, inside and outside your clothes. One day I was particularly hungry and the owner's wife was going into town to make a McDonalds run. I ordered a quarter pounder with cheese and fries. When she returned my mouth was watering for that big delicious sandwich. We got ready to eat and wouldn't you know it, as I was unwrapping my burger it dropped on that sawdust floor. Folks that was all I was going to have to eat until I got home that evening and I was hungry! I picked that sandwich up, dusted off all the sawdust I could and I ate that burger. Hey, I was hungry and besides, a little sawdust would just help me get a little more roughage in my system, right?

I've always prayed over the food I eat and I always ask God to sanctify, or cleanse it. With all the E. coli and other stuff going on you can't be too safe. I believe there are times we eat things and God does exactly that cleanse it so that it won't harm us.

This was the second thing that Jesus prayed God would do to keep us safe in this world. In His prayer found in John 17, Jesus had asked God to keep us in this world as witnesses of Him, but He also asked God to keep us from the evil of this world and to sanctify us by His truth. He then added that God's word was truth.

The sanctification of God upon each of us who have come to Him in salvation will keep us clean from the world. Now I'm not talking about what we wear, whether we wear jewelry or not, or how long or short our hair is. I'm not talking about the things that we do or don't do. I'm saying that the cleansing power of God that takes place when He comes into our lives will keep us clean no matter what we get ourselves into. I do want to add however, that this isn't a license to do whatever we want to do, but a protection against sin in the world.

Our sanctification is a daily process. Remember that Jesus asked God to cleanse us by the truth, and added that God's word is truth. As we read the word of God and grow in Him daily, we are cleansed more and more. This cleansing will help us to be protected from sin and keep us safe even in a troubled and cruel world. But, haven't good Christian people been met with terrible plights? Yes they have. One of my brother-in-laws, who was a firm believer in Christ, was shot and murdered. God didn't protect him from that. But the cleansing power of the Holy Spirit in his life kept him even in death.

It's the same with each of us. We may live hum-drum lives. It may seem like nothing exciting ever happens to us. Or, it may seem like you have more trouble than you can handle and that God isn't doing anything about it. Know that the cleansing power of Jesus Christ will keep you even in troubles, when the chips are down, when good fortune is not falling your way and in whatever situation you may be in. You can cope in the real world. God, Jesus and the Bible are not in fairy make believe worlds; no, they are in this real world and they understand and deal with the real problems we have. We can cope because God will keep us from evil and will cleanse us!
