"You May Now Kiss The Bride".

by Pastor QT Nyathi

In all the weddings I've attended there is an exciting part that everyone doesn't want to miss. It's the moment that receives the loudest cheers or even whistles especially from the young people. I'm talking about the 'you-may-now-kiss-the-bride' moment. Have you ever asked yourself why this is such a significant event at weddings?

Let me suggest two reasons for you.

To start with the kissing component is supposed to be a special moment; a unique or peculiar event specific to a particular person or persons.

Unfortunately to many this time is not special at all because to them kissing is a common occurrence that they've been doing all along.

I remember the day that moment came for me. It was on the 16th of August 1997 in a packed hall.

When the marriage officer said, "You may now kiss the bride," I duly obliged. I took out my handkerchief, wiped my lips, drew my portable beauty close, and gave her a sumptuous smooch.

It was a delicious moment, a special time, a second I had dreamt about for so long-a treasured clip. Why? Because we had never done it before.

Secondly that second is a commencement moment; the beginning of a physical union that is later sealed by the marriage act. That is why it is prefixed by the word now.

The word now means in the historical present, this very moment or this very second, a start from present to the future. It means here and now and not before.

Its use shows that you were not supposed to kiss before then otherwise the instruction should then be 'you may continue to kiss the bride'.

The wedding kiss is the popping of the fresh wine bottle of marriage in public to get the new couple started on sampling the sweet contents which will be gulped in full later on in private.

Unfortunately for the majority of dating couples these days the wine bottle has lost its fizz. Not only has the couple to be unceremoniously opened it, they've gone ahead and drunk its waters.

What will this moment hold for you on your wedding day? Will it be the special and beginning sacred moment that it's supposed to be? I pray so.
