Psalm 110:5

by Don Costello
6/29/2013 / Bible Studies

Psalm 110:5

The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath.

a. The first four verses of this Messianic Psalm are about his ascension to the right hand of God and his people walking in the authority and power that was given to Him. In verse four we see the Messiah in his High Priestly ministries. Now in Psalm 110:5 the scene switches to his second coming.

1. "The Lord at thy right hand"

a. This is of course Christ Jesus as proven by the notes under Psalm 110:1.

1). Psalm 110:1 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

2). Jewish Rabbinic understanding at the time of Christ was that this was referring to the Messiah.

a). Matthew 22:41-45 Matthew 22:41-45 "While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.
He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions."

3). Jesus confessed before the Sanhedrin that he was indeed the Christ, the one sitting at the right hand of God.

a). Matthew 26:63, 64 But Jesus held his peace, And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

2. "shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath."

a. The second coming of Christ has been described as a day of slaughter and it will be.

1). Revelation 6:15-17 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

2). Revelation 19:11-16 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King Of Kings, And Lord Of Lords.

b. The similarities between Psalm 110 & Psalm 2 many. Both deal with Christ on the throne and both mention his dealing with those who refuse his leadership and his kingdom.

1). Psalm 2:9, 10 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.
Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.

2). There are also similarities with a passage in Revelation.

a). Revelation 2:27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.
