DELIVER ME - PART 3 - GOD KNOWS

by Jerry Ousley
7/26/2013 / Christian Living

Have you ever been tempted to do something when no one else was around? "No one will ever know " we argue with ourselves. That could be very true. No one is watching or perhaps you are home all alone. Who would ever know?

This has most certainly happened to me many times. Most of the time I'm able to resist the temptation, mainly because of the lesson I learned - the hard way! My parents, along with my aunt and uncle, had planned a trip together requiring an overnight stay. I was about fifteen years old and my cousin was fourteen. Somehow we managed to convince our parents to let us stay home stating that we were "old enough" to be responsible. Yeah, right! I can't believe they fell for that one!

They left on their trip and my cousin, Ron, and I planned our "party" well. We lived out in the country so we couldn't really invite any friends over but we were going to "party hearty" ourselves. Since we lived in the country we couldn't get a hold of drugs or drink, but we did have cigarettes and some good rock and roll music (remember that this was in the late sixties so our rock and roll music consisted of groups like "The Jackson Five"). We were even brave enough to smoke in the house!

We stayed up all night. Sometime during the wee hours of the morning we realized that we had to clean up and get the smell of cigarette smoke out of the house. It was early winter but we had no choice but to open the windows, and spray whatever we could find to cover up the smell.

The plan had been that we were going to be picked up for church by some friends and spend all day with them, returning to church that evening where our parents would pick us up after getting back from their trip. We could only hope that we'd done a good "cleanup" job.

Well, to make a long story short, my parents didn't smell the cigarette odor, but they did notice the odor of all the stuff we had sprayed! I had some explaining to do and the "gig" was up. Needless to say, it was a long time before they trusted us to do that again!

The point is that we can't hide anything from God. He is always on the job and, even though it seems impossible that He can know what each of the six billion people on the face of the earth are doing at any given time, He does. That's why He's God. We can't get away with anything.

The Bible tells us that David was a man after God's own heart. This was God's description of him, not man's. That meant that, despite his failures and sin, God looked past all of that and knew just where David's heart was. God knew everything about him. He knew what David was covering up, when the words from his mouth were true, and what his intentions really were. Sifting through all of those things, He knew the real David.

As a young man, when he tended the flocks for his father, we are told that on at least two occasions David defended the sheep from a lion and a bear. God somehow gave David the strength to kill both of these beasts. Even then, God was preparing David's heart to face the giant, Goliath, and later the bigger giants that would come in his life.

Folks, it is a fact of life that we too are going to face lions and bears. Sometimes they are only inconveniences and other times they are great obstacles in our lives. God knows our hearts. He is ever preparing us for the giants that are certainly coming in our lives. Being a person after God's own heart requires our commitment to Him. It also requires that we love Him above and beyond anything or anyone else in our lives. You can be a person after God's own heart. Reach down inside better yet, let God reach down inside because when it comes to the matters of the heart, He's the expert; He knows what to do.
