Lois The Lioness

by Debra Burgess
8/01/2013 / Short Stories

Lois had found the two orphan cubs in the wilderness of the grasslands. She had heard their cries for food and water. Her compassionate heart would not allow her to leave them in that dry place and she took it upon herself to carry each one back to her home of safety to nurture them in their infancy.

She wasn't quick to give them names because she knew the importance of such identity. At night when they curled up under her paws she watched them closely in their restful states. Soon she noticed the difference in how each would relax. One of the cubs could be still for hours while the other would toss and turn regularly. Watching them play she noticed these same traits, the elder cub would kneel peacefully while the second one would pace back and forth around her, enjoying being in motion.

In the heat of the day Lois would take long walks with the cubs, teaching them what to lookout for but never making them fearful of their surroundings. She often purred deep in her throat with approval at how the cubs liked to explore new places. Each in turn would take the lead of exploration depending on the territory. She decided a good name for the more tranquil cub would be Clark and the more restless cub she named Lewis.

Lois loved to play with her cubs and often shared her childlike nature to run with them; chasing them and letting herself be chased by them. She would often slow down so they could feel as if they had won when they overtook her. She wanted to be generous in how she encouraged them to learn to run. In these games she knew their muscles were getting stronger, and how much they would need this strength and confidence to survive in the wild.

The days passed quickly, with some hot and scorching, while others were cold and fierce. Lois taught the cubs how to hunt down good food sources and where water could always be found no matter the inclement weather. Her mood was always steadfast understanding the cubs were prone to make many mistakes while they grew. Whenever they'd become wounded, she would let them curl up beside her while she groomed them to heal in preparation for their next outing.

Lois loved to watch them all the time, but it was in the nights when she contemplated most about these cubs. As they rested, she too could rest, calling to mind all the lessons she knew needed to be passed onto them. It was here when she'd close her eyes and see her King lion again. He was beautiful and the best of all the lions. He had kept her safe throughout the years she had known him. He was a husband, a lover, a friend and much more. While she was young he had taught her to rely on him for all her needs, never leaving her alone. As she grew older her faith in his abilities increased.

Her King lion would lead her to the far boundaries of the Savannah wilds and share with her, about places beyond what she could see that they were meant to explore together in their future. In these precious times she spent with him, she could remember being fearful of the unknown. She would often hear growls and barks in the darkness around them making her tremble, but his reassurance would always fill her with a greater courage to keep going further with him.

Many times he stood beside her as they faced danger from foes and creatures wanting to hurt them. In time Lois learned to know when it was her who was to fight or when she just needed to be still and watch her King lion take on the foe for her. Their years together were wonderful and she listened intently to everything he shared. One afternoon he led her high upon a hillside overlooking the plains below them. They sat a long time together being quiet before he began to speak to her about their intertwined fates. When he was done speaking she looked over the plains knowing she would do all he asked of her.

In a few days it was time to come down from the high place overlooking the beautiful lands. Walking together, a unity between them could be felt while they journeyed back to the plains. The night came quickly and Lois heard growls and barks from the darkness. Her King lion came closer, telling her it was time for her to keep going and to stay hidden. She felt the touch of his soft thick mane upon her face and didn't want to pull away, but he was quick to insist, reminding her of what he had shared on the high hill. Lois sprang away quickly as instructed and in seconds the vicious attack began. She ran fast but the sounds of her King lion in battle haunted her. She could hear the breaking of his bones and the tearing of his hide, she could even smell his blood being spilled and all to protect and save her.

Opening her eyes once more, she looked upon her orphan cubs with love. She knew the price that had been paid for her life and it was important she equipped them with every skill they would need for their days ahead. While they slept she purred loudly over them, grooming their coats. Her heart beat louder whenever one of them would make a squeak or a yawn knowing how they felt safe in her care. The morning began to dawn and it was time for a new lesson.

This time Lois took them farther then they had traveled together before. Clark and Lewis were excited to explore these new places and with Lois nearby, each had a sense of security. Soon the cubs could smell new scents and realized they had crossed over into territories of other lions. Lois had previously warned them about older lions that would kill cubs to protect their territories because they saw young lions as threats to their positions in the pride.

With each new scent, Clark and Lewis trembled, but were also curious to explore beyond the boundaries that they had known. Looking to Lois they waited for her signal of direction for what they should do. Lois, remembering what her King Lion had shared about places beyond, encouraged the cubs to keep going. Other lions began to appear nearby looking gaunt with mangy coats. Their growls were intimidating to the cubs, clearly letting them know they were not welcomed into these outer territories. Lois began to roar back at these intimidators loudly. Clark and Lewis felt a strengthening in their courage upon seeing this mighty lioness protect them and their explorations. Each came alongside their mentor and lifted up their young and immature roars. To their amazement, the rogue lions seemed to cower wandering away.
