Delusions of Grandeur

by Kristin Stuckmyer

Read: Revelation 3:15-22

The other day, I saw a commercial for a popular air freshener. In it, they blindfolded some people and brought them into a disgusting and smelly kitchen that had been sprayed with the air freshener. And they thought it smelled like they were in a flower shop, or a meadow, or by the ocean, or something. These commercials came to mind as I studied the passage above which was brought to my attention by a friend and her son.

These verses are written of a church in Laodicea, and verse 17 particularly stood out to me: "'Because you say, 'I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,' and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked." Most of us seem to lean to one extreme or the other - we either think too well of ourselves, or we think very poorly of ourselves. This verse is for the former mindset. Occasionally, we get full of ourselves. We think we have it all under control, but really, our world is just a stinky, disgusting kitchen masked by air freshener. Others may see it before we do, and God definitely does. So when you hear those hard words of correction, remember that God just might be using that person to help open your eyes to reality and help you clean up the kitchen!

Verse of the Day:
Rev. 3:19 - "'Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent."
