Dip Your Foot in the Water - Part 3 - How Is Your Faith?

by Jerry Ousley

We commonly greet each other with the words, "How are you today?" There are some people who really want to know. But others seem offended if you proceed to tell them the truth. Many of us are so busy that we really don't have time to hear the woes and problems of someone else. I saw a movie once in which a fellow office worker asked this question to the star of the show. He promptly began to go into great detail as to what was going on in his life while the man who had asked how he was stood impatiently waiting to go on to his duties. Finally the guy spilling his guts realized that his fellow worker really didn't want to know what was going on in his life and said, "You really didn't want to know how I was doing did you?" To which the other man shook his head indicating "No." The question, "How are you today?" has become a mere formality and a habit.

However, as believers in Christ we should be interested in how others are feeling and what is going on in their lives. I've caught myself in this same scenario before. As a minister people are fairly free about telling you about their aches and pains. Early on in ministry I was much like the office worker who really didn't want to know. But as time passed I discovered that God wanted me to know so w could pray with the individual about their situations.

In talking about Joshua and the people of Israel when they crossed the river Jordan into the Promised Land, it took great faith to believe that God was going to provide the way for them to get to the other side of that swollen river. I suppose we could reason that it shouldn't have been hard for them after all the miracles they had experienced during their forty year trip from Egypt, but then if you read the entire account you'll discover that often their faith was weak even after great miracles of provision from God.

You see, our faith must grow. We have prayed, "God give me faith." Sometimes that can be a loaded request. God has given each of us a measure of faith when we came to Him in salvation. The Bible does mention a gift of faith as one of the spiritual gifts, and that is something different. It could be defined as a special anointing of faith for a given situation.

But everyday faith is something that grows with time. Christians who have been in the body for very long tend to have great faith. It's because of their experiences. They've witnessed the provision of the Lord over the years and just like the old saying "practice makes perfect" so as we rack up these times of required faith under our belts our faith grows stronger. But when we pray "give me more faith" we are actually asking God to put us in situations that require faith. Those situations help our faith to grow.

As we've said, faith is really another way of saying, "I believe what God has spoken and I trust in it and stand upon it despite the odds." Our faith is belief in God regardless the circumstances or the outcome. Sometimes the result is miracles in our lives. Other times it seems that the world is crashing in on us. Either way, our faith, our belief and trust in God, should stand strong and unwaivered. That is true faith.

Perhaps as Christians, when greeting each other, we shouldn't ask "How are you today?" but instead, "How is your faith?"
