Meditating with a Mantra
by Rhonda Jones 6/12/2007 / Christian Living
Mantra meditation is one popular method used by many Christians to enter into God's presence, eliminate worry, quiet a restless mind, and learn to live more consciously. Mantra meditation is the use of word, phrase, or scripture repeated silently in conjunction with your breathing.
Common Christian mantras are:love, peace be still, The Lord's Prayer, the lord is my shepherd, joy, and Jesus. My personal mantra favorites are the scriptures, "God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, of love, and of a sound mind,""I walk in kingdom abundance," and "All my needs are met according to God's riches and glory in Christ Jesus." Select a mantra that is meaningful to you. Many Christian meditation experts say that the shorter the mantra the better.
To begin, sit in a quiet location that is free from distractions. Set a timer for 15-20 minutes so that you're not constantly worried about the time. Relax your mind and body through a series of deep breathing exercises. If necessary, relax each member of your body. As you continue to breath, silently repeat your mantra. You can mentally say your mantra in rhythm with your breathing or anytime your mind begins to wander off.
Throughout the meditation, continue to focus on your mantra and your breathing. Let outside thoughts float gently by. Allow the mantra to permeate every cell of your body. Become less aware of your body and more aware of God's presence. At the conclusion of your meditation, gently open your eyes and slowly adapt to your surroundings.
That's it! Meditating with a mantra will wipe away any negative thoughts and leave you feeling peaceful and empowered.
