Switching to a Work-at-Home Income

by Naomi Ball
9/18/2013 / Career

Whatever your reasons for wanting to work from home, switching to a home based business and having to rely on that income can be a little terrifying! But millions of Americans are doing it and are doing well. With forethought and planning you can take the fear right out of it.
One thing you can do to make the transaction easier is to start a "party plan" business in the evenings and weekends or to work part time and build your home business part time. The biggest advantage to this is that you can build up a client list, which will be the life-blood of your business. Before you begin any business do your research, learn as much as you can about the company and don't fall for their advertising jargon of miraculous products and getting rich quick. If you ever find the need of switching to a different part plan company keep your client list! They know you and trust you, which is the key to successful business, and you don't want to have to start all over again. A good client list will make the transaction to a smaller income easier.
Income from working at home can fluctuate so you need to plan ahead. Determine how much or how little you can pay yourself based on your past spending history. In order to do that you need to keep track of your daily, weekly and monthly spending habits. Get a little notebook or calendar and write down EVERYTHING you spend. Use this information as gauge to balance and prioritize your spending. What are some things you can live without? Watching the birds come to the bird feeder everyday is nice but they can always find food elsewhere. Where can you cut back on spending? Do you really have to have new expensive name brand handbags? Other than utilities, what has to be paid monthly? Keep careful notes and stick you your plan so you can survive low fluctuating times.
Don't feel like you have to replace your paycheck. When thinking about working from home you don't necessarily have to replace the paycheck you will be loosing, because you will not be requiring the same expenses. Make a list of all your job related expenses such as gas, toll, uniform, food (eating out, take out, frozen food), coffee, wardrobe, child care, and anything else you can think of. Then figure out how much you spend on each for one month. When you subtract that total from your paycheck you will have a reasonable goal. You can save a lot of money by cooking your meals from scratch, making your own pot of coffee, you won't need to buy new cloths as often, nor will you need to drive as much which will save on gas. If you have high car payments you can sell your car and get an older, less expensive car. There are a lot of things you can do differently! Going without a regular paycheck is life changing, so change your life.
. Don't forget to save money for taxes, which have to be paid quarterly. Ideally you should save 10% of you income until you have 6 months of income in savings.
Quitting work and starting a home based business will shake up your world and could be extremely stressful. However, if you take the time to tack your spending and make a plan for how to change your spending habits, and how to establish financial goals, the transaction from paycheck to home based business can be smooth and fearless.
