LEN'S LINES ------ A Little Religion On A Positive Note By Len Granger

The Walls of Jerusalem

In the Old Testament of the Bible, we see where God's people the Jewish nation of Israel built protecting walls around Jerusalem which were often destroyed as the city was laid in waste. The enemies of the small nation wanted to keep the city unprotected. After my pastor gave us a sermon on God's message to Nehemiah, about rebuilding the broken wall, Nehemiah 2:12. " And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me, neither told any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem. neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon." As Nehemiah goes by night he sees where the walls are broken down and gates consumed by fire; and God gives him a plan to rebuild the walls and provides support from the King Artaxerxes

Engineers of today investigating the building practices of the Jewish nation, wonder how Solomon's temple and walls of the city where put together. Certainly there was no Gothic balance behind its magnificence. Semetic engineering used is very weak and allowed Solomon to destroy his temple. Only the Romans have built large enduring monuments that remain today in Palestine and area. When I was stationed in Turkey, the bridge built by the Romans 2000 thousand years ago in the city of Adana is still in use daily carrying four lanes of heavy traffic over the bridge.

The native building materials of Jerusalem were stone, mud and rubbish and in very early times a few forest would supply wood posts. The early walls of Jerusalem consisted of mainly a mud wall with a facing of stone and the facing presented the appearance of blocks accurately dressed to smooth bearing surfaces; it was a sham.

However, as the land was deforested, limestone was found to be abundant and in the time of the Nehemiah he was able to use limestone and build the wall in 52 days while being surrounded by several enemy tribes that wanted the Jewish nation unprotected. This limestone now called Jerusalem stone looks like limestone but is as durable as granite. As shone today in parts of remaining ancient walls that were so built, rustic streets, and ancient buildings of Jerusalem , the stone becomes more durable over time as it is exposed to the natural environment. Jerusalem Rock is referred to as the " Rolls Royce" of all limestone and marble and is highly prized all over the world.

Now where is this Jerusalem stone that is prized and allowed Nehemiah to so quickly rebuild the walls of the city? Yes, the quarries extend some 300 yards deep under the city of Jerusalem with the main entrance near the Damascus Gate at the north of the city. Nehemiah used oxen and donkeys to pull carts with the rock from the quarries under the city and the broken wall rocks were used to build houses against the wall to give it more strength. The quarries were originally caves carved by water and there is a pothole where water was obtained for the city. After the Turks rebuilt the city wall in 1542 they sealed the entrances to the quarries but in the spring of 1854 Dr Barclay an American physician helping the local people was walking with his sons and his dog started digging and the opening to the quarry was found.

Over and over in the Bible the walls of Jerusalem were only temporary protection and as they turned from God the walls came tumbling down. Our gracious loving Savior and Lord Jesus Christ is the only durable rock that stands the test of time and gives us protection for eternity.

Trust we will all be in the church of our choice singing and praising our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ this Sunday the day of worship.

God Bless America
