Atheist "Mega Churches": A Pooling of Ignorance?

by Robert Driskell
12/19/2013 / Christian Living

Apparently, the latest fad in atheistic circles is to form churches in which to worshipwhat, exactly? However, rejecting God, in the midst of all the evidence around us (yes, the evidence is clear even though atheists have become proficient in denying this fact), is an exercise in ignorance.

Now, before I am accused of being mean-spirited or simply calling people un-politically correct names, I need to define the word 'ignorance' as I am using it here. I am not talking about a lack of knowledge, but a willful rejection of what is known to be true. The Bible makes it clear that everyone knows there is a God (Romans 1:18-25, 2:14-15; Acts 14:17, 17:24-27); therefore, it is a suppression of truth, a conscious rejection of what is known to be true, for one to say that there is no God.

It is interesting that this 'atheist mega church movement' is being spearheaded by two British comedians. This fact alone should give pause as to how much truth it contains. It is common practice among God-rejecting men and women to ridicule truth they refuse to accept. What better tactic than to attempt to make something they reject look foolish. That way, instead of dealing with reality, it can be laughed off in a way that bolsters their self-reliance, and rejection of God, even more.

Although these 'mega church' meetings resemble Christian worship gatherings, they are anything but. This mockery is meant to replace a real relationship with real God. They substitute true worship with something that mimics it, but has no redeeming qualities. This type of gathering only serves to perpetuate a lie. People gather together to mock the truth and then pat each other on the back about it.

What this amounts to is the public rejection of God and the deification of self; humans thumbing their collective noses at the One who created and sustains them while they glorify themselves and a way of life that logically and spiritually leads to ruin. This is reminiscent of the metaphor of straightening the deck chairs on the deck of the Titanic as it sank. It is an exercise in futility. It is a group of people willfully rebelling against the God of the universe and banding together in order to make themselves feel better and convince others to follow them in their rebellion. The Bible has a concise statement concerning these people, "The fool says in his heart, "There is no God"" (Psalm 14:1, 53:1 ESV).

Those behind this movement rejoice in their belief that more and more Americans are drifting away from any religious affiliation (they don't realize that they are in the midst of their own religion). The tragic fact is that so many Americans are drifting away from God. It is not church attendance, or allegiance to a particular denomination, that forgives one's sins. It is a relationship with Jesus Christ, who paid for our sins on a cross, which renders our sins forgiven. Otherwise, we are destined to spend an eternity of punishment, separated from the very presence of God (II Thessalonians 1:9).

Seeking to introduce people to Jesus Christ and to help them become "transformed by the renewing of their mind."
