Satisfaction from Being Filled

by Jerry Ousley
1/10/2014 / Christian Living

I originally wrote this on Christmas morning. Downstairs, Debbie was in the process of preparing a wonderful meal for later that afternoon when our children would arrive for Christmas at our house. We would open gifts to each other and indulge in those culinary artistic creations and afterwards experience being filled. I realized that we were very fortunate that Christmas Day. Many would not share the same blessing as our family and for that I prayed that God would show us our part in helping. At the same time I could not feel guilty for God's blessings.

How good it feels to be filled! There's nothing like a full stomach topped off with the company of friends and family. I always try not to be a glutton and indulge in this thing that is considered sinful. But it's hard, especially for a fat man who loves to eat as much as I do. Sometimes it just happens, and I know there are some of you who know what I'm talking about; you plan to cut it off to keep from getting that stuffed feeling. But the food is so good and then I always forget about desert. I want to get my fair share and so after the meal I think, "I'll just eat a small piece of that pie," but often my definition of a small piece is that I don't take two. That action usually puts me "over the top." But I still love being full!

Jesus said in Matthew 5:6, ""Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled." He was comparing being filled after experiencing a deep hunger and thirst to the spiritual desire to be filled that is really in each and every one of us (although some refuse to acknowledge it but that doesn't mean that it isn't there).

We all like to be filled. Unlike the physical world, those who have joined the Kingdom of God have no excuse to not be filled. Even if we don't possess a Bible still we can seek God and He will provide the way for us to be filled.

He was specific about what we may be hungering and thirsting for. He said that those who are hungry and thirsty for righteousness will be filled. We must define righteousness. According to the original language of the Bible, the Greek word interpreted as "righteousness" literally means "justice." Looking at this word, it encompasses what is right not only for us but for others as well. Most in this world want justice, at least for themselves. Justice means that we get what is fair. We also want justice for others. We don't like seeing people, and especially children, mistreated. Though we often think that there's a lot wrong with our American justice system, it's still better than most systems in the world. We hate seeing people treated wrongfully. But even those treating others wrongly in some twisted way think they are getting justice for themselves. That doesn't make it right. Those who steal believe in their hearts that somehow they are getting what they deserve. Most of those who commit murder in some way believe that they are getting justice on their victims. It is sin and it is wrong but in their hearts they feel they are right. I'm not standing up for them so please don't misinterpret what I'm trying to say. It's their satanic-influenced way of getting what they think they deserve.

But in reality there is only one way to be filled with righteousness and justice and that is to obtain the righteousness, the justice of God. No matter how good we may be we all fall short of God's righteousness. In fact, Isaiah said that all the righteousness of man is as filthy, dirty rags. There is only one way to be filled with pure and truthful righteousness and justice and that's to obtain it from God.

Jesus Christ made the way for us to be filled. We hunger and we thirst. We are dying of starvation and dehydration spiritually unless and until we come to Him. He and only He has made the way for us to be filled; for our spiritual hunger to be satisfied and our spiritual thirst to be quenched. As believers in Christ we must seek for Him and if we do, what our spirits long for will be satisfied. If you don't know Christ as Savior, that spiritual longing hunger and thirst can finally be realized. What your soul longs for will find you eventually filled if you will only come to Him.
