We Are Risen

There's a story about two men who went moose hunting in Alaska. The plane took them deep into the wilderness, finally landing on a lake. A cabin sat just off the shore of the lake. Two weeks! They had booked two weeks away from cell phones, computers, television, radio and all modern conveniences. The two men were excited. They were told by the pilot that they were each allowed to kill one moose, but because of the weight, when he returned to pick them up they could only haul out the carcass of one animal.

The two weeks passed very quickly and each man bagged his prize. When the pilot landed on the lake to pick them up, contrary to his instructions, they had two carcasses boxed and ready to go instead of one. "Didn't I make it clear that we could only haul out one carcass?" asked the pilot. "You did," Replied one of the men, "but last year the pilot let us take out both; can't you bend the rules for us this one time?"

The pilot gave in, wanting to get back to civilization before a big storm blew in that was rapidly approaching. The men strapped a boxed moose carcass to each of the small plane's pontoons and they climbed in. The pilot took off giving the plane extra throttle to compensate for the additional weight of the second moose, but when he got to the tree tops it hadn't been enough and the plane skidded across branches knocking it out of control and finally it was brought to the ground. The plane was destroyed but fortunately none of the men were hurt.

One of the men asked, "Hey Burt, what happened? Where are we?"

Burt replied, "Well Gus, the plane crashed, and I'm not real sure but it looks like we landed in the same place we did last year."

This story illustrates the lives of many of those who come to Christ. The Bible tells us in Colossians 3:1, "If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God." When we come to Jesus our carnal self dies and we are raised a new man. This is brought out in Colossians 3:9-10. Just like an airplane which rises above the ground lifting into the air, we are lifted spiritually in Christ Jesus.

But is seems many don't make it. How often have we seen someone submit to an altar call, and they mean it with all their hearts. Why else would a person risk the embarrassment of standing in front of a group of people acknowledging that they have been wrong, that they are sinful and need help? In reality, coming to the Lord requires us to be degraded in front of others. People just won't do that unless they are convinced that it is needed in their lives. So, in the case of most, I believe they are sincere.

Then a week later they have given in to their old way of life. They are found doing the same old things as they did before. We can try to justify that by believing that they didn't really mean it when they responded but is that always the case?

I believe that many have tried to take too many moose carcasses with them. They just couldn't leave their catch behind. They meant it when they made their commitment but instead of looking for those things which are above they eyed the carcasses of their moose on the dock and just couldn't leave it behind. "Maybe it won't be too heavy. Perhaps I can have both." So they strap their extra baggage to the pontoon and take off. But the load is too heavy. The plane can't raise high enough and they crash.

If you've found yourself in this position it isn't too late. The good thing about God is that when you crash His plane isn't destroyed. You can start again. But you've got to leave the baggage behind and look above to the things of Christ. When you do, you will rise above the treetops and soar with the Savior!
