My Faith Comes First
by Eyvonne Black
1/21/2014 / Testimonies

On my recent holiday standing by a checkout, I recognized the attractive face of Queen Latifah on the front cover of the January 2014 edition of 'Good Housekeeping'.
At first I wasn't sure what attracted me to put it in my basket. Was it her beautiful smile with her amazing straight white teeth, her striking A-line red dress or the title of her article 'My Faith Comes First?' However, I felt drawn to add the magazine to my items for check-out. I quickly came to the conclusion that it was indeed the title.

As I was being driven home, with excitement I took a quick peek of her article, but wasn't in the place to fully appreciate what I was reading. I needed the time and quiet place to absorb every word of why her faith comes first. When I found that place of tranquility I read of the tragedy she suffered from the loss of her older brother in a motorbike accident, a bike she had bought him leaving her feeling stricken with guilt and grieve. Months later she again suffered devastation when she experienced a car-jacking where her dear friend was shot and she nearly experienced another death. She felt that her 'professional advancement came with a price; personal devastation'.

Queen Latifah (born as Dana Elaine Owens) expressed that from these shocking incidents she suffered a breakdown in her behaviour. However with the emotional support of family and close friends they helped her to overcome the pain of devastation and tragedy; she then made a specific point to say that the 'real key' to her strength and recovery was her renewed Faith in God.

Dana had a Christian Baptist upbringing and was a regular church goer, so it was not difficult for her to engage in prayers. Connecting to God with continuous prayers enhanced her recovery. (Phillip 4v6-7) states: 'Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus'. She was confident that God would 'provide comfort'.

She shared her experience of hearing a little voice saying 'Dana don't let it all go because you're going to get through this'. She acknowledged that 'no one is perfect' and all have flaws, but firmly states 'God's love is there for me'. She expressed assurance that God will help her to develop into the person He wants her to be. She concludes the last paragraph by saying 'I am always surrounded by His love and He is always there'.

Queen Latifah, a Professional Artist (in more than one area), has shown us that having Faith in God is paramount for our healthy existence and a healing to tragedy and devastation. She has shown factual evidence of this and has given me a fresh look at (James 1v2 NIV) where it states 'Consider it pure joy my brothers whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your Faith develops perseverance'. (John 3 v16 NWT) also states 'For God so loved the world ............... that he gave his only begotten son ................ that everyone exercising Faith in Him might not be destroyed [emotionally or physically] but have everlasting life'.

In conclusion I just want to say 'Thank you Dana, I am pleased I was drawn to your article as it has truly been a blessing that I felt compelled to share'.
