Placing God First

by Walter Kahler

"You shall have no other gods before Me"
The book of Genesis clearly explains who created everything, and there is no doubt that God is the creator. All we have to do to understand this fact is open our eyes and look around at all living things. There is no denying the facts because man has yet to explain the main ingredient of creation and God has designed it this way for a reason. He has kept this secret from us, and science has been trying to disclose it for centuries but have come up empty. Everything around us is not a mirage but the existence of God and He has instilled in each of us the truth of His existence. Every one of us at some point has faced this absolute reality for God loves us and wants us to understand that He is the alpha and the omega.
God has no competition, and all He wants from us is to place Him first and follow His commandments. God is looking for our devotion and commitment to obey His commands. This first commandment sets up all the others, and there is no mistake that it is at the top of the list. The Bible supplies countless evidence of this divine truth and the rewards God gives when we obey this commandment are incredible.
Let us take a look at the outcome from obeying this commandment in biblical time. Abraham was a faithful servant of God, so he lived his life trusting Him and understood that He was real. God spoke to Abraham and asked him to sacrifice his son, and he prepared the altar willing to follow through with the command, but God allowed him to keep his son. It was in Abraham's faith by placing God first which his son was spared because God was pleased with his obedience. Abraham was rewarded with God's grace and prospered.
Another good example is Mary chosen by God to give birth to Jesus. She had found favor with God and was conceived through the Holy Spirit to give birth to Christ. Mary placed God first and followed His command by trusting Him. God blessed her, and she was used to bring salvation to the world. Her obedience paved the way for our redemption.
God supplies us with the same results as He did with Abraham and Mary. When we glorify God, our whole being is affected. The Holy Spirit fills our hearts and becomes connected with God in a personal way. God uses the Holy Spirit as the means to let us know His presence and this feeling are unlike any other. This ensures us we have found God because He lets us know His powerfulness.
The way we prevent placing other gods before Him is by living a way of life centered in God's world. There are many worldly things which appear to bring great promise, but fail to provide us with a solid grip in living a Christian life. These temptations, when acted upon, will place false gods ahead of Him and cause us problems. It will take discipline, devotion and reliance upon God to keep us placing Him first because we lack the strength in following His commands. We cannot fool ourselves the wickedness of the world is real. To be unprotected from the evil one is unwise and exposes our weakness. We need to swallow our pride and devout ourselves entirely to Him. Acting faithfully, we place God first and find the narrow road. We cannot find the Right Path until we place no other god before Him.
Mankind has followed other gods. The Egyptians, Greeks, Mayas, and Romans all had their own gods. Today technology has a strong hold on just about everything we do. All generations have left behind signs of other gods, and God uses these examples so we can gain an understanding the trouble this brings. All of these dynasties have fallen hard because God has revealed the painful penalties brought about from our disobedience to this commandment.
The first way we place God first is praying. Pray is the beginning of it all and, by humbling ourselves before God, the door to His kingdom opens. Prayer is essential because it is the primary way of contacting Him. When we embrace God then He introduces us to His son Jesus, and we now have the full recipe in being saved. God created our conscience as the means of communicating with Him and through prayer He fills our souls with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God's way of speaking with us, and this incredible feeling is His presence. There are no other feelings inside us like the one He gives because He is Almighty!
The message from God is clear and all we have to do to find it is to accept Christ as the Savior and live by His commandments. When we find God's message is the point where we have decided to place no other god before Him and have picked up our beds and follow Christ. We have departed from our prideful being and are willing to abandon ourselves to God. This is a great revelation because we have awakened to the truth which is without God we are nothing.
Once we have tapped into God then we will need to act accordingly, and praying is an important part of the equation. Faith without works is dead, and the lack of it prevents us from being saved. We live the example of salvation and serve God by practicing His will in every aspect of our lives. Accepting Jesus Christ as God's beloved son and the savior of the world is the only way we will meet God. This truth was shared by Christ and can be found in the Gospel according to John. Jesus left us this John 14:6 "I am the way of truth, and life. No one comes to the Farther except through Me".(NKJV) Through following this truth, we are placing God first by living as Christian.
Embracing Christ is placing God first and keeping us focused on salvation. Christ was never too busy for placing God first because He was always praying. Jesus had perfect discipline and demonstrated the proper way in keeping the Lord first by putting aside time in order to receive His daily bread. Living in salvation means we are willing to follow Christ's example so we must discipline ourselves by scheduling quality time with God.
Placing God first is not a onetime deal, and we always need His strength to pull us through the day. When we leave Christ out then we also have shown God our disobedience in following this First Commandment, and this leaves us vulnerable by subjecting ourselves to constant temptations and sins. We are unable to overcome excessive sinning because we are not powerful enough in preventing them. The only way to be saved is making Christ our top priority, and this is accomplished through our Christian characteristics.
Each of us has been called by Christ to join Him so we can build a foundation to eternal life. Our experiences with God may differ, but the results are the same. All of us are commanded by Christ to follow God's way of living by obeying His rules in order to live in His house. This is where our difference's end and the similarity of our existence begins because we all need to obey God's commandments. This all starts by placing Christ first which brings us together in the way God intends.
The question is: What actions am I taking in improving on placing Christ first?

I am new to writing and have just completed my first non-fiction manuscript in the Christian Living category. This manuscript is based upon my own personal relationship with Christ. I am currently working on a book proposal for its submission. I loving writing about God especially about His grace.
