THRIVING

The teaching of waiting on the Lord (most of the time) only sounds good when there's really not much unmet needs in our lives. I mean anybody can easily concur that the Lord is good...all the time if there is assurance and availability of the next meal, when the kids' school fees have been paid, electricity, phone and water bills are covered. It is easier to lift our voices and hands in praise and worship when all our family members are hale and hearty.

Rejoicing in the Lord feels real good when we have that dream job and are living that dream life. It is easier to say to another, wait on the Lord when life seems all cozy for us. You know "they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint" (Isaiah 40:31) is easier to digest when the road we are traveling on through life is generally straight and smooth.

But what about when it gets rough? When the bills coming in outweigh the corresponding cheques, kids are throwing tantrums every other minute, a family member is sick and the boat we sail is continually being rocked up and down by the waves of life. What about then?

The "wait on the Lord"s we have gathered along the way, for what might feel like a long time, vanishes. We tremble. We become afraid of our imaginary impending doom. Imaginary because no water can swallow us with the Lord on our side.

But it feels like it will. We look around us and we see the boats and ferries of unbelievers seemingly thriving on the water. Those who do not have the fear of the Lord appear prosperous whilst the saints of the Lord are hungry, sick and without enough resources to live on. Immediately, we want to jump. We contemplate it. We wonder what it must be like aboard the 'thriving' ferries. Oh, how we really desire that ours will thrive as much!

But it does. Even better. For "a little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked" (Psalm 37:16, KJV) and "the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and He delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with His hand" (Psalm 37:23-24, KJV). "They shall not be ashamed in the evil time: and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied." (Psalm 37:19, KJV).

We are, as christians, undoubtedly better in whatever situation we may be in. In good and bad times we, in every sense of the word, thrive. It isn't how we see things nor how we feel about things that matters. Rather, it is how God sees things and what He has said concerning us. His promises He'll fulfill and not one of His Words will return to Him unfulfilled.

Even though we tremble, He'll always arise and say to the raging waters "Peace, be still." God is God in every circumstance. Events don't define Him, He defines them. Though it may not be what we want to hear in difficult times but that is where we find peace - when we wait on the Lord. He'll come through and He will definitely turn our mourning into laughter.
