The Familiar

by Steve Countryman
5/16/2014 / Christian Living

Familiar hates change! Change will bring you out of the familiar and out of your comfort zone. Being stuck in the familiar can be dehabilitating, destructive, isolative, a prison and even a death sentence! People will stay with something that is familiar even though they know that it is not good for them. Addictions, abuses and sinful routines are a few examples of the familiar. Fear of the unknown or unexpected will keep you in the familiar. Satan wants you to stay in the familiar. He will help you justify your prideful stubbornness of wanting to stay in the familiar! The familiar is what you depend on. A false sense of control that you think you have in the familiar. Your expectations stay the same in the familiar. Even though you are stuck in a rut you are used to being there and your surroundings and routines are familiar. The familiar includes outside activities away from home. Religion can be a type of a familiar. People will use the familiar as an escape from other problems or troubles. Not a remedy but a temporary escape! One definition of familiar is: in Witchcraft and Demonology, an animal, as a cat, that embodies a supernatural spirit and aids a witch in performing magic. A familiar spirit, a supernatural spirit or demon supposed to attend on or serve a person.

Not all familiar things are bad or sinful. Anything that hinders your growth in and your walk with your God or restricts the moving of the Holy Spirit in you is a bad familiar. Anything that draws you away from your family, your God and your responsibilities is a bad familiar. God always works for your good! He wants to bring you out of the bad familiars and into something better. It always requires change. It always requires trust, faith and hope in your God. It always involves something new and different, something out of your comfort zone and out of your control. The familiar requires you to be independent, self-reliant, prideful not needing anyone's help. God requires you to be totally reliant and dependent on Him, needing God's help. Those who think that they don't need God's help daily are only fooling themselves.

That is why when people backslide they end up going back to what they were stuck in before, the familiar! Thinking that it will be different and better now only to find out that it is different now, but worse! Some people will try to run from God because they are fearful of the change that He requires in their life. Afraid to leave the familiar for the unknown. Afraid to put their trust and faith in God's ability to work out all things for their good instead of them trying to fix everything. But God is a good and faithful God! He loves you too much to leave you stuck in your mess. God will not force himself on you. He will wait for you to come to Him. Some times He will do something to get your attention. Don't ignore His nudging!

Genesis 6:3 Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will not contend with man forever, When the Bible says that God hardens someone's heart as He did with Pharaoh, it means that our God is a God of principles and as such one of His principles is agreement. When someone has made up their mind that they don't want God and they will not change their mind, then God says "so be it". That is when God enters in agreement with them and their name is blotted out of the Lamb's Book of Life forever! Likewise, when a believer says that they want God to be their God, He enters in agreement with them and says "so be it"! Hardening of the heart is a willful personal decision of the heart and is not a God created decision! Can God melt a harden heart? Yes, if that person is reachable. Only God knows.

Are their any familiar things in your life that you are holding on to? Are they holding you back? Are they destructive or do they hinder God's working in and through you? Do you want to be delivered from them in your life today? All you have to do is turn them over to God and ask Him to deliver you from them and He will. God is waiting to heal your heart and set you free today!
