I Want To Be A Christian Today

by Steve Countryman
5/29/2014 / Christian Living

To be a Christian is to be Christ-like, to be like Christ. "I want to be a Christian today" is what I found myself saying out loud recently when I once again slipped up and did exactly what I didn't want to do. I have been praying and the Holy Spirit has been working with me to control my frustration and my tongue. I get frustrated at something and I start complaining about it. That turns into murmuring which turns into anger which turns into frustration which leads to explosions of words that I wish that I didn't say. Sometimes it stops at complaining of a minor annoyance. Other times I end up yelling at some driver as if they could hear me with my windows up. Or working on a computer that is giving me fits and doesn't want to run right. The sad thing is that I truly don't want to lose my cool and more importantly the peace of God that I was blessed with as I started out my day. God's peace is to be cherished not thrown away at someone or something in anger.

It's not that I go around all day acting like a sinner hoping no one notices. But I believe that we are called to be Christians every day all day not just on Sundays! We are to be a blessing to others everywhere we go. We are to look for ways to bless others and take advantage of those opportunities that are set before us. To be a Christian today is to be proactive. It is to be diligent and determined. It is to be what all of us are a practicing Christian. Just as a doctor practices medicine we are to practice being Christ-like. We are the righteousness of God at all times. We have been set a part, made holy as He is holy. We are not of this world but just passing through it. AND it is all about how we pass through it!

To get through one day without complaining or loosing my peace is my recent goal, to be a Christian today. I know that sounds easy enough but I end up letting myself down more often than I want to admit. Yes there is a lot more to being a Christian than getting through one day without complaining. And yes I have a lot of areas that need my attention and the help of the Holy Spirit to bring me through. But complaining opens the door to more problems and strife than we realize. It also harms those around us. Those who get to hear us loose our tempers and our witness. Those who get to witness someone who doesn't act like a Christian. Or worse yet they get in our way and end up on the receiving end of our wrath. It damages our testimony and makes it hard to convince others how great our God is when all we do is complain and get frustrated acting like the rest of world.

We are Christians when we are around others and when we think we are alone. We are Christians when we share the Gospel and when we forget to. We are Christians when we feel like it and when we don't. We are Christians when we say and do the righteous things and when we say foolish hurtful things. Being Christian is who we are, not what we do sometimes. Being Christian is our way of life every day not just when we think we need to act "holy". Our goal should always remain the same, to love and obey our God daily. How Christ-like you are is all up to you and your faith. The more faith and trust you put in your God the deeper and closer your walk is and the more He reveals His love and truth to you. It is important that I am a Christian today and every day!
