Reasons Why You Should Not Be Empty Of God's Words

by Ngozi Nwoke
6/26/2014 / Christian Living

To be empty of God's word is to be engulfed by the feeling of emptiness. This is a feeling that makes existence unbearable. Life has a lot to offer you but if you lack the words of God, you will get nothing out of it but empty life. This article gives you the reasons why you should not be void of the Lord's words.

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life - John 6:63 (NKJV)

And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord - Ephesians 5:18-19 (NKJV)

For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart - Hebrews 4:12 (AMP)

Emptiness is a feeling of lack of meaning or purpose, it can get to a point of emotional numbness, frustration or despair and it can be as a result of bereavement or a sudden change in life. Emptiness is a sense of hopelessness, low self esteem and lack of motivation.

Many people have tried to fill this empty feeling through eating, spontaneous shopping, immorality, drug addiction and bullying. Unfortunately, these ways never help; instead they leave you worse off than how you were before.

However, the word of God has proven to be the solution to the feelings of emptiness. The word of the Lord is so energizing and powerful that it has the ability to attend to your spirit, soul and body. It is able to expose, analyze and judge the very thoughts and purposes of the heart. The Psalmist in Psalm 119 understood the efficacy of God's word and took time to reveal the wonders in His word (Psalm 119:18). I encourage you to read and meditate on Psalm 119.

The reasons why you should not be empty of God's words

1. The Lord's words are spirit and life - John 6:63

This world is governed by spiritual forces and you can only make it by walking in the spirit. The word of God is spirit, so walking in God's word is to understand the principles of the world and subduing it - Genesis 1:28. Also when you have the word of God within you, you have life: life in your spirit, mind, bones and marrows and organs. Life within you extinguishes any emptiness. That is why God encouraged us in Ephesians 5:18 to be filled with the Spirit who gives life.

2. God's word is settled forever -Psalm 119:89

As Amplified version bible puts it, God's word stands firm as the heavens. Since God created the heavens, it has been and there had been no alteration whatsoever; even so God's word has been and whatever He said is what happens. Also heaven and earth may pass away but the word of the Lord will not pass away, it remains forever - Matthew 24:34-35. Therefore, when you are full of the Lord's words, you are sure of your life, your future and all that concerns you because His words in you will always prevail over any contrary circumstance.

3. God's word is true - Psalm 119:160

The entirety of His word is truth. There is no "but" in His words, He says what He means and means what He says. There are no shades in His words for He is not man that He should lie - Numbers 23:19. What He said if it had not come to pass will come to pass.

4. You are a spirit being - 1 Thessalonians 5:23.

You are essentially a spirit, having a soul and living in a body. That is why when someone dies, the body remains and decays because what gives it life, the spirit, is gone. And the word of God is the food of the spirit. As you fill yourself with the word of God, your spirit gains complete ascendancy over your soul and the body. This gives you control over your environment with the very words of the maker.

5. You did not make yourself - Psalm 119:73

Every product has a manual for operation by the manufacturer. Adherence to it brings out the best from the product; otherwise, it becomes an abuse. So also, God who made you (Psalm 139:13) has the scriptures (His word) as His manual for living on earth and if you want live and enjoy this life without the feelings of emptiness, then you must consistently follow His instructions as written in the scriptures.

6. You were born for a purpose - Psalm 139:13-17

God is a God purpose; He never does anything without a well orchestrated plan. In God's book all the days of your life were written before ever they took shape, when as yet there was none of them (Psalm 139:16). Therefore, it is wisdom to follow the plan of God for your life to avoid emptiness in life, because you can only be fulfilled doing what you are made to do.

7. The word of God is light unto your path - Psalm 119:105,130

You are bound to stumble when you can't see where you are going. God's word is lamp unto your feet and light unto your path. It shows where to put your feet and gives you a glimpse of a couple of your next steps. When you are filled with His word, you can't stumble in life; it shows you the immediate steps to take and gives you a glimpse of your tomorrow for assurance and better planning. And if you are about to take a wrong step, it also shows you the terrible end it will lead you to so you can avoid it.

8. It is the wisdom bank of God - Psalm 119:9, 98

God, the only wise God (Romans 16:27), has the scriptures as His bank of wisdom made available to mankind. So, to be filled with His word is to be filled with His wisdom. I heard a man of God saying sometimes ago that there is no problem anywhere but wisdom problems. Therefore, for any problem you may be facing go get the wisdom for it from the word of God. His words make you wiser than your enemies; you will always be ahead of them. Every trap or plan they have for you will always be disappointed - Job 5:12. When King Saul wanted to kill David, all his plans failed because David was following the words of God that gave him steps ahead of King Saul at all times.

9. It gives you understanding - Psalm 119:99,100,104,130,144

Through wisdom, a house is built but by understanding it is established - Proverbs 24:3. Understanding establishes you as a superior to challenges and the word of God gives you understanding. It gives you understanding more than your teachers and the ancient ones, and by it you live - Psalm 119:144.

Peter had vision of unclean animals and he was asked to eat them and he refused, but when the word of God came to him and he obeyed, he had a better understanding of God's plan for the gentiles more than his fathers. And sometimes later, when a dispute arose along the same line, Peter was able to settle it because he had a better understanding from God's words - Acts 10, Acts 15:1-31.

10. It gives hope and peace - Psalm 119: 49-52, 165

The Lord's word causes you to have hope, even when there is no reason to have hope. It comforts you in the midst of challenges because you know God's word is true and is settled forever and therefore must prevail over the challenges. As long as you hold unto His word, you will enjoy life and peace. Those who love His words and abide in them enjoy great peace and nothing causes them to stumble.

Abraham, contrary to hope, believed in hope that he would become the father of many nations according to what was spoken by God, "so shall your descendants be" - Romans 4:18. The word of God kept his hopes alive till Isaac was born despite the deadness of his own body and Sarah's womb. He had peace within him that it would be even as God had said.

In conclusion, attend to the word of God; consent and submit to His sayings. Let them not depart from your sight; keep them in the center of your heart, for they are life to those who find them, healing and health to all their flesh. Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flows the springs of life - proverbs 4:20-23
