The Ruby of Christ's Blood

by Jerry Ousley

Ouch! Man did that ever hurt! Who would have thunk that working on a computer could be a hazard? Most computers of today have cases made mostly from plastic. But this was back in the mid-nineties and then most computer cases were made from metal. I had been working on one and was elbow deep in the thing. If you've ever done mechanical surgery on a computer you know that the old style power wires fit very snuggly in drives hard drives, CD players and DVD players (of course at that time to have a DVD player in your computer was a luxury). That's what I was doing; trying to pull a power connector loose from a drive. I grabbed that thing firmly and was pulling with everything in me. When it finally came loose let's just say the force with which I was pulling continued once the connector had released itself from the drive. Slowing the force down is much more difficult than you might think. I proved the natural law of action and reaction; you know, the one that says that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. My hand continued in a rearward motion, connector firm in my grip, until it settled on a sharp edge of that metal computer case interior. Because the metal was much harder than my thumb it cut a chunk of flesh away as a result. Today I still have a scar on my right thumb as a result of that opposite reaction. As I said, you wouldn't think working on a computer could be an occupational hazard.

The blood oozed from the quarter inch gap in my thumb where a hunk of flesh was now missing. I never found that hunk of flesh. I've heard of a lot of things discovered inside a computer all the way down to a snake. Since I didn't find my small piece of thumb I wonder if whoever looked inside later found a hunk of flesh dried on that computer case? Anyway, as I said, the blood continued to flow. Even though I acted tough it wasn't easy to see myself losing that precious red liquid from my body. I quickly bandaged it up and pretended it was nothing, but secretly I babied that thumb for several days.

We don't like to bleed. I guess because first of all it means that we've been injured by something or someone. Secondly we know that our blood is our physical life. It is the internal river, if you will, that carries nourishment from what we eat and what we breathe to all parts of our body and without it we are dead.

That's why the shed blood of Jesus Christ is so important. He gave His life, and allowed His precious life-blood to flow from His body in order to cleanse us from our sin. His ruby-red blood washes the dirt and filth of our sin and we come out white as snow. What a miracle.

Psalm 37:16 says, "A little that a righteous man has is better than the riches of many wicked." Then we are told in Matthew 6:19-21, "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." We want to take a look at five precious gems, the first of which is the ruby of the shed blood of Jesus Christ.

A bloody mess is repulsive. I've seen a few movies I wish I hadn't seen because of the bloody mess portrayed in them. It turns our stomachs making us sick. Jesus was beaten to a bloody mess. Our Lord, as He hung on the cruel cross of Calvary was probably caked with blood over which fresh blood oozed until His physical life-source had left His body. It isn't a pretty thought. We have found ways to make it sound better, more appealing, but had we witnessed the crucifixion, and the beating He received prior to it, we would have been sickened.

The beauty of it comes in its accomplishment. The shed blood of Christ, though repulsive to human thought, has become the ruby of the Gospel because it became the means which paid for our sin. The sacrifice of Christ's life paid the debt man owed for our criminal activities against the God of Heaven. We have been released from that great debt because of it and that, my friend, makes the gory story of Christ's crucifixion a jewel of much value. No amount of money could ever give us what His shed blood has given. If that isn't a precious gem then there are none.
