The Pure Gold of Heaven

by Jerry Ousley

Several years ago, shortly before the recession was officially acknowledged, Deb and I discussed investing in gold. We didn't just talk about it but spent a good deal of time in serious consideration. At that time the price of gold was running between $600.00 and $650.00 an ounce. We also began to do some research. What we found was the best place to buy gold was directly from the U.S. mint. The only problem I saw was that there is a law that says if you own gold and the nation gets into trouble financially, it has the right to force you to give it back. Yes, they can do that. It hasn't happened yet but it could. We weren't able to find what we considered to be a reliable source to purchase gold elsewhere so we let the idea slid by.

Today the price of gold is much higher. Had we purchased it then and took the risk, today we could have increased our investment by thirty-five percent. That's a pretty good yield in only two and a half years. I've slapped myself on the head several times because of my distrust.

Considering the great value of gold, I heard a story that goes something like this: A rich man was dying with a deadly disease. In a dream he had a discussion with the Lord and even though the Bible tells us that we can't take anything with us, the man somehow convinced the Lord to allow him to bring one bag with him to Heaven.

The day came and the gentleman passed from this life to the next. True to His word, the Lord allowed him to carry in one bag. But at the gate, Peter, seeing the man with the bag in his hand, told him, "Sir, you know that no one is allowed to bring anything with them into Heaven." The man replied, "But I had a special arrangement with the Lord." Peter checked the records and sure enough it was there that this gentleman had been granted the special privilege of bringing in one bag. He said, "Okay, strangely enough it's here in the records, but I need to inspect it first." The man agreed and handed it to Peter. As Peter opened it and looked inside he shook his head and laughed. It was filled with gold. Peter closed the bag and handed it back to him with the comment, "Man did you blow it! You had been given this special privilege by the Lord and you could have brought anything with you that you wanted, and you chose to bring in a bag full of pavement!"

The riches of Heaven are beyond description. The book of Revelation gives us a general overview, but even that is not adequate enough to describe its wealth. It is so rich that the streets are paved with the purest gold that could ever be found.

The gem of gold represents our great reward for being a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. Now we don't serve the Lord for what we can get out of the relationship. Anyone who does that is seriously wrong. I cannot pass judgment but it does make one to wonder if someone proclaiming the Lord as Savior just for what they can get out of it has even been saved to begin with. We see that in Simon, the man who had been a sorcerer in the Book of Acts. Even though he had been seemingly converted, when the Apostles came to the city with the gift of the Holy Spirit, after seeing how it changed the lives of others, Simon offered them money to gain this same power. He was told that he would perish with his money.

Gold doesn't just represent material wealth but all the richness we receive in a spiritual sense. We are given a taste of the riches of the spirit here on earth after coming to the Lord and genuinely committing to Him. But just think how wonderful it will be to see all those who have gone on before from Abraham, Moses, and the prophets, to our own dear loved ones who have preceded us in death. We will have eternity to share with those folks.

But the greatest gift of all will be when we see Jesus face to face. When we see the Lamb as it had been slain The Lion of the Tribe of Judah Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior and have the privilege to talk with Him personally, that my friend is a pure gold beyond any imaginable.
