Wrong Views of God

by Jerry Ousley

Now why wouldn't this thing work? There I was; I had assembled a shelf we had purchased for our new TV set, only it looked like it was lop-sided. It was a heavy duty steel constructed frame with three glass shelves on it. They were made so that they cascaded one above another and the lower shelf was out the farthest while the other two were slightly recessed above. The picture looked perfect. But what I had put together was far from perfect. The middle shelf protruded out farther than the bottom shelf and I'm still not certain where that put the top shelf. It looked nothing like the picture.

What went wrong? I had followed the directions (or so I thought) to the "T." Normally I took a quick look at the directions when assembling something like this and then let my manly, mechanical instinct kick in. In times past when I did that there were always extra parts left over and it never seemed to work properly. I suppressed that tendency this time and went step by step by the instructions. But the thing just didn't look right. Had they included the wrong parts? Were the instructions placed in the box to a different model? Had there been a misprint? Of course none of these things were true. It was really all my fault. As I went back over the instructions step by step I finally realized where I had made MY mistake. I had looked at one of the illustrations wrong and that one miscalculation placed the whole assembly out of sync. It was all me. When I made the adjustment and then followed through with the rest of the instructions the shelf came out perfect. I just looked at it wrong.

In trying to understand who God is it is extremely important that we look at Him in the right way. When we begin with an erroneous view of God we are doomed to failure in our quest to discover the truth. Some people may believe that God is real, but they take the position that He's just up there. Yes He's keeping everything going but He's way too busy to listen to individuals. They think that there really is no way to understand God so they believe that He minds His own business taking care of things and has just left the world, all our problems, and our government up to us. They don't really believe the Bible and just pass it off as yet another writing of man in attempt to discover who God is. Some of these folks go as far as to say that the worship of false deities is merely their own attempt to discover God and that these folks are just as correct in their view about God as anyone else. Yet if they would compare the religious writings of the world what they would discover is that the Bible is the only collection of holy writ that actually reveals the true nature of God. It tells the story of how man moved away from God and how God has provided the way back.

Still others believe that God exists but that He is everywhere in nature. Yes nature teaches us about God and when we study it closely we can see His signature on everything that has been made. But He is not in those things. Those believing this teaching think that God is actually in everything and that everything is a part of God. Again they reject the teaching of the Bible which plainly tells us that even though God made everything that He is not in everything. He exists in a three-fold form: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. All three are parts of the one true God. He can be inside of us after salvation but only by way of the Holy Spirit. He is not in the flowers, the trees, the rocks, or any of the animal creation.

There are many other wrong views of God. I submit that the only right view comes from a correct interpretation of the Bible. How do I know that it is true and all the other views are false? Read it for yourself. There you will find the truth. Of course if you choose not to believe it then that's your right. But that doesn't make it any more untrue. As we understand the Bible everything slides into place and it all makes sense. It will take some time and some detailed study but it plainly says that if we seek we shall find; and we will. When we are truly looking for the truth God will direct us to that truth. A wrong view of God is a lot like that shelf I was talking about. It's out of shape and won't work. Only when we follow the step by step instructions as found in the word of God does it look like it's supposed to. We've just got to look at God in the right way.
