Father Introduces Son to the Real World

By Greg Miller 2014

"I want you to live with Jesus forever, and I also want you to do a good job of representing Him while you live on the earth," Robert told Ronnie on his son's 10th birthday.

Every day, Robert taught Ronnie a new Scripture verse, also teaching him the practical application of the Scriptures.

Like his heavenly father, Robert was very generous. One day, Ronnie asked his dad for a penny. "Sure," said Robert.

The next day, Ronnie asked his dad for two pennies. "No problem," said Robert.

The following evening, Robert, Ronnie and Ronnie's mom, Rose, were preparing dinner together. Ronnie asked his mother for four cents. "Sure, Ronnie," replied his mom. "I'll give the money to you as soon as we've eaten dinner."

True to her word, Rose gave four cents to Ronnie after they had eaten dessert. Ronnie thanked his mom, and then went to his room to watch his favorite major league baseball team on TV. Robert drove Ronnie to school the following morning. "I see you've been practicing your math skills," Robert said.

"What do you mean, Dad?"

"Recently, you've been asking your mom and me for some change, so we figured you must be practicing for a math test," said Robert.

"No, it's nothing like that. I'm just starting to build a nest egg for my retirement."

"Retirement!," exclaimed Robert. "You can't retire until you've had a job and worked for 30 or 40 years. Besides, you're only asking for a few cents every day so, at that rate, it will take a lifetime for that nest egg to hatch."

"Not really, Dad. If you've been paying attention, I've been asking for double money every day, so within a month I'll have over a million dollars. I know something else, too, Dad. You and mom are multi-millionaires."

"You really have been paying attention."

"I know we have a ton of money.

"You've missed one important calculation," said Robert. The Bible tells us in Second Thessalonians 3:10, "'For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.' As soon as you graduate from high school, we want you to get a job. You can continue to live with us and pay rent while you attend college.

"Ronnie, we've been giving you 10 dollars a week for doing chores, and we will continue to do that, but additional money for your retirement nest egg will have to wait until you start earning your own salary. If you continue to ask us for that money, we will no longer give it to you. Son, welcome to the world of adulthood!"

Ronnie chuckled and said, "Being an adult doesn't look like it's all it's cracked up to be!"
